Words that have been Turned into Baby Names

What will you name your baby? That question is one that most parents take very seriously. Much consideration goes into choosing a name for a newborn. It is understandable that parents want their child to have a unique name. Perhaps this is why many parents in 2014 selected a random word as the name for their babies. Nameberry took a close look at the names parents gave to their babies in 2014. They put together a list of baby names that are words. In short, parents chose a commonly used word, that has a specific meaning, as the name for … Continue reading

The Meaning of Irish Symbols on Gravestones

The symbols that families choose to put on the gravestones of their loved ones hold quite a bit of meaning. Genealogists with Irish ancestry might be wondering what the Irish symbols that appear on the gravestones of their ancestors mean. Understanding Irish symbols on gravestones could help you learn more about your Irish heritage. The images, symbols, and markings on gravestones do not get their by accident! Someone, (probably a close family member to the deceased) made choices about what, exactly, should go on that headstone. While artistic or aesthetic reasons could have influenced those choices, often, it is the … Continue reading

Decorate with Words

Spring is right around the corner, which means wedding season is about to begin. There are a number of wedding shows scheduled in my neck of the woods this weekend. No doubt there will be at least a few scrapbook vendors hawking their wares in an attempt to show brides-to-be how they can showcase their wedding photos in elaborate memory albums. My wedding scrapbook is quite fancy, thanks in large part to my aunt and cousin. They worked tirelessly to craft the entire book. While the photos speak for themselves, one of the most touching parts of the album are … Continue reading

Incorporating Other People’s Words Into Your Layouts

In a previous blog I shared some of the poems I plan to use in my Thanksgiving layouts. If you are like me, and struggle to express your innermost thoughts in a journaling block, then it helps to know that there are places you can visit for inspiration. Fortunately, the Internet is teeming with easy to navigate sites, which feature poems that are appropriate for scrapbooking. One of my favorites is PoemSource.com. It is loaded with warm words that are a welcome addition to any Thanksgiving-themed page design. Another site worth visiting if you have writer’s block is AbundantFun.com. The … Continue reading

Decorating With Words

The expression, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” sums up the essence of scrapbook layouts. However, if you are a fan of journaling blocks, then you know that the right words can provide an added dimension to your favorite photos. Journaling blocks allow you to share perspective on a particular event or series of pictures. Poems are another way you can decorate your layouts with profound thoughts and add deeper meaning to your images. However, when it comes to including poetry to your page designs, it is critical that the words fit the tone of the layout. There are … Continue reading

A Few More Genealogy Words You Don’t Know

It can be interesting to find out the meanings of obscure, rarely used, genealogy terms, words, and phrases. If you are someone who likes to play with language, or who loves doing crossword puzzles, then you probably find it fun to learn new words. I thought that every genealogy dictionary would hold pretty much the same words. To my surprise, this assumption is not true at all! So far I have wandered through the Genealogy Glossary on the Family Tree Magazine website, the ROOTS Genealogical Dictionary, and the Glossary of Terminology at Genealogy Quest. This time, I decided to see … Continue reading

Even More Genealogy Words You Don’t Know

Every once in a while, it can be fun to play around with words. One great thing about genealogy is that there seems to be a nearly endless supply of genealogy jargon, phrases, terminology, or words that you might have never seen before. Each genealogy dictionary is slightly different from the rest. There is a good chance that you will find at least a few words that are unfamiliar to you. Personally, I think it is fun to find out the meanings of these words and phrases now, when I don’t necessarily “need” them. I imagine it might be frustrating … Continue reading

More Genealogy Words You Don’t Know

Genealogy is the study of family. It also involves learning how to research well. One of the more fun aspects of genealogy involves the discovery of the meanings of words, terms, and phrases that you did not know before you started doing your research. There is always something new to learn and discover! It is a good idea to have access to more than one genealogy dictionary. Not every mysterious word that you come across is going to be found in every dictionary. Some of these glossaries are quite small, and somewhat limited in their scope. In a previous blog, … Continue reading

Genealogy Words You Don’t Know

What does that word mean? This is a question that genealogists are bound to ask themselves from time to time. When this happens, it is time to consult a genealogy dictionary to learn the meaning of that archaic word that you have never seen before. Genealogy research involves looking at old documents, and sorting through archives that hold collections of very old papers and vital records. Whenever you go digging through the past, there is the possibility that you will run across some words or phrases that you are unfamiliar with. Terminology that was commonly understood ages ago could have … Continue reading

The Power of Spoken Words

Sometimes I have to go back to this simple fact: lots of what we say is lost in translation. The addition to that is that more of what we write is lost in translation. Being a student and practitioner of theatre I should always have this in mind. I think it is the time spent writing plays (a very writing-centric activity) that lulls me away from the reality every once in a while. I truly do believe in the power of words… but people speaking them adds so very much. It should come as no surprise, then, that things often … Continue reading
