You Have The Power To Do Right By Your Customers

There is an epidemic going on, and you may already have been affected by it. Customer service has become somewhat of a joke in recent years, especially with large companies. It seems as if whenever I place a call to resolve an issue with a product or service, it takes a long time to resolve the issue and I often have to talk to multiple people and be placed on hold multiple times for long periods of time. Often, the people that I am talking to do not seem to understand or care about what I am asking of them. … Continue reading

Book Review: A Woman’s Power

When I heard about the book, “A Woman’s Power: Threads That Bind Us to God” by Fay A. Klingler, I jumped on the chance to read it. My life right now seems chaotic, and disorganized. Having a new baby in the house for the third time has turned my world upside down. I don’t have a lot of spiritual time to myself, and I was grateful for the opportunity to read a book that I was hoping would give me a spiritual boost. And it did. Fay Klingler shares some of her own life experiences as well as experiences of … Continue reading

Vocabulary Words for Years With Presidential Elections

As you know, the United States has a Presidential election every four years. In November of this year, someone will be elected President. Before your child can understand the election process, and the significance of it, he or she has to understand some related vocabulary words. This year, 2012, is an election year. Many news stations and websites have been talking about the political process, the candidates, and the impact of certain issues that are likely to play an important role in how people choose to cast their vote for President of the United States. No matter what your political … Continue reading

Power Struggles

I’m not sure who is more stubborn, me or my three year old. Some days I’m about ready to rip my hair out. We’ve all been there. You’re sitting at the dinner table trying to get your child to eat their vegetables when you hear the dreaded words, “You can’t make me!” Immediately you feel that sense of frustration start to build, the angrier you get, the more your child digs in their heels, and the power struggle ensues. Unfortunately, your child is right, you can’t actually force the vegetables down their throat, but you can enforce consequences for it. … Continue reading

Words to Live By

Oprah Winfrey once said: “Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.” I’m pretty sure she was looking at her BFF Gayle King when she uttered those now famous words. Then again, perhaps, she was looking directly into the camera while Gayle giggled on the side. Regardless, no truer words have been said, which is why my own BFF included the quote in the “Friends Forever” scrapbook she presented to me the day I left for college. Another one … Continue reading

The Power of Persuasion

How much better we would get along in our marriage relationship if we became more adept at choosing our words carefully and watching the way we phrase things. Telling your marriage partner what they should, or should not, do rarely achieves what we desire. It rarely makes for a harmonious relationship. The reality is people often resent being told what to do. So how can we deal with this? A far better way is to use praise, encouragement and suggestion. Instead do saying ‘You should do this.’ It would be better to ask, ’What do you think about doing this?’’ … Continue reading

The Power of Spoken Words

Sometimes I have to go back to this simple fact: lots of what we say is lost in translation. The addition to that is that more of what we write is lost in translation. Being a student and practitioner of theatre I should always have this in mind. I think it is the time spent writing plays (a very writing-centric activity) that lulls me away from the reality every once in a while. I truly do believe in the power of words… but people speaking them adds so very much. It should come as no surprise, then, that things often … Continue reading

Give Boys Super Reading Powers

In many ways my 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old nephew are like two peas in a pod. They both enjoy racing Hot Wheels, collecting rocks and pretending they are wolves in the wild. However, when it comes to books, the path splits and while one willingly devours tales of whimsy, the other heads for the hills in hopes that a stray title doesn’t accidently fall in his lap. It is a well-known myth that girls excel at reading while boys, due in large part to their superior spatial awareness, kill at math. And so it goes with my two cuties. My … Continue reading

Work Those Words

Each month my local scrapbook shop sponsors a display which customers can win by entering their names in a little box. This month, in honor of spring break, the display features a bunch of Disney-related books and embellishments. Needless to say, even if you aren’t planning a spring break vacation to the Magic Kingdom, the contest is still worth entering, as you could easily use the Disney accessories to spice up a baby scrapbook or hold on to the items and use them when you eventually take a trip to a Disney theme park. We don’t plan to visit Disney … Continue reading
