Why do some couples not want a traditional ceremony?

by Heather Long | More from this Blogger

There are many reasons for a bride and groom to skip the traditional wedding in favor of something different. Remember, what makes a wedding important is the personal meaning it holds for the bride and groom. When the couple is not happy with the idea of a traditional wedding, they may eschew it in favor of a ceremony or location that is more in tune with their own personal desires.

Some reasons a couple may want to skip the traditional wedding include:

  • The bride has no interest in wearing a huge, formal white wedding gown
  • Traditional weddings can be expensive; some of the more frugally minded couples may find the idea of spending so much on something that doesn't mean as much to them is not a worthwhile exchange
  • Traditional weddings often mean a lot of guests - if the bride or groom comes from a very small family, they may not want to try and host a ceremony that they cannot fill with a lot of people or in fact, even if they have the people to invite - they may not want that many there
  • Sometimes, large traditional weddings become more about the guests than about the bride and groom
  • When it comes to hosting a wedding, some brides get overwhelmed by the plethora of details - they don't get to enjoy the wedding because they are too busy worrying about having everything just right
  • They have dreamed of their wedding for years and they'd incorporate some unique aspects to the traditional wedding

In truth, a traditional wedding has its perks. Those who eschew tradition are very often not doing so out of malice, but more out of the need to create their own traditions. Traditions all must begin somewhere after all.

I'm curious, did you have a traditional wedding?
