Do Children Make You Happier?

What role do children play in a parent’s happiness?  Do we find more joy in raising these youngsters or is there a longing for B.C. days (before children)? Apparently new research indicates that yes, parents are happier than those who don’t have children.  However, those with children that are the least happy are single and young parents. In fact, these groups may even be less happy than childless adults. Some have argued that the results are skewed because they didn’t differentiate between parents of babies and those with adult children.  Clearly the age of a child will make a significant … Continue reading

What Not to Do in Front of Your Kids When It Comes to Money

Children learn what they see. It is a true statement for any kind of behavior including money management. Children’s attitudes toward money and whether or not they will be able to make it work for them as adults has much to do with their parents. If you are married, think about any differences that there might be between you and your spouse, regarding any issues having to do with money. Is one of you more a saver than a spender? Do you approach investing or debt the same way? Chances are that you may each have different ideas about handling … Continue reading

Parent Argues for Use of Isolation Room

This is quite the opposite of what usually happens! Typically, news articles have stories where parents of a child who has special needs make a case against the use of a “scream room”. This time, however, a parent is pointing out why she wants her children, who have autism, to be able to have access to a safe, soft, isolation room. Some schools use isolation rooms as part of their Special Education program. The rooms have been referred to by some as “scream rooms”, because the child placed inside is screaming. This time, we have a parent who is explaining … Continue reading

Arguing Your Way to Divorce?

Although infidelity is probably one of the biggest reasons for couples to divorce, I did a little research on some of the other causes. One thing I found (and was a little surprised about) is that arguing is another big reason for ending a marriage. So why am I surprised? Maybe it’s my own deluded thinking, but doesn’t every couple argue? Okay…I know, I know. Arguing once-in-a-while and every single day is very different. I will give you that. But arguing in itself doesn’t seem to be a good reason to divorce. The act of disagreeing, fighting or whatever else … Continue reading

Will Your Marriage Be Stronger or Broken Apart?

Will this make my marriage stronger or will it break us apart? Have you ever asked yourself this, when faced with a life-altering event? Maybe you have never been in this place where it’s a consideration. But it was definitely something my marriage recently faced. The situation involved one of our teenaged children and it threatened from the very beginning to crumble things. We were both reeling from the circumstances and almost immediately, finger pointing was ready to begin. Who was at fault for this catastrophe, we seemed to be asking. I guess it’s natural to look for someone to … Continue reading

What Couples Argue About

I was recently reading an article from 2011 that listed the top 10 things that married couples fight about. What I was expecting wasn’t what I read. I was thinking more along the lines of fighting about finances, the raising of the children, and in-laws. But this list was quite surprising. For instance, one of the fights is about stubble in the sink. I am blessed enough to have a son and husband who shaves and doesn’t know how to wash their stubble down the drain (note the sarcasm). But have I ever gotten into a fight with my husband … Continue reading

What is YOUR 4 Month Old Up To?

I love every stage in my baby’s life. There are precious moments in each one, but I am particularly loving my sweet little four month old right now. No, he is not sleeping through the night yet, and no, his tummy troubles have not been fixed, but he sure is sweet, and I am loving watching him grow and develop. It seems that for me, when my kids hit 4 months old, I start to really enjoy all the sweetness that comes with being a Mom. My little guy is smiling at me all the time. One lady said, “Oh, … Continue reading

Pick Your Battles

I’m a firm believer and I have blogged about picking your battles when it comes to raising teenagers. But I think the same can be said about a marriage. In fact, it seems that we tend to be a bit more nit-picky in our marriages than in any other relationship. Slight irritations can be made into huge deals. Those things we knew about our spouse when we married them suddenly becomes impossible to live with another day. But many of those irritations and frustrations we may experience in a marriage are just not worth the battle. You know the old … Continue reading

Are You Giving Your Kids the Kiss of Death?

I am more J.Crew than JLo or JWoww. I prefer khakis to skinny jeans and respectable cardigans to revealing camisoles. And that goes double for cosmetics. If it were not for the fact that I have skin like a Shar-Pei and a daughter that I am forced not to embarrass in public, I would probably go without make-up every. single. day. While I am far from a Japanese Kabuki actor, I do apply some foundation, mascara and eyeliner on days I am required to venture beyond my driveway. If I forget to add one or more of the aforementioned cosmetics … Continue reading

Insurance Blog Week in Review – January 22-28, 2012

Things move pretty fast on the Insurance Blog. If you don’t take the time to look around, you might miss something interesting. Here is a quick review of everything that hit the Blog this week, along with a brief description of the main topic of each one. This is a good way to “ketchup” on whatever you might have missed. Catholic Bishops Might Sue Over Health Insurance Law The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has said that it might sue the federal government over the law that requires all businesses to include coverage of birth control in their employer-sponsored … Continue reading
