When the Wife Earns More Money

It has always been the assumption that men are the breadwinners of the family. At one point in time, they were. Men made the money and the women took care of the children and the house. However, times have changed. The cost of living has forced women to work and women have worked their way right up the career ladder. Women are now doctors, lawyers, and business associates. More than thirty percent of wives earn more than their husbands earn. Of course some of these women are married to jobless men or stay at home dads. Although the wives are … Continue reading

The Kitchen God’s Wife – Amy Tan

Amy Tan’s writing is rich with beautiful imagery, taking the reader and placing them right in the heart of China. With everything from the words she uses to the way she strings them together, she creates a tale so overflowing with atmosphere, you feel as though you’ve left America and traveled the world in your mind, immersing yourself in a culture rich with tradition and heritage, which may be different from your own but yet welcomes you as a visitor and guest. In “The Kitchen God’s Wife,” we meet mother and daughter, Winnie and Pearl. Pearl is in her forties … Continue reading

Control Issues in Marriage: Money as a Source of Control

One of the reasons so many women are adamant about earning their own incomes is that they have seen what can happen to women who have no resources of their own. While most men are not trying to control their wives with money, it can and does happen. If the woman has no income or makes significantly less than her husband makes, it seems as if he wields control. If he takes advantage of the situation, it can be very damaging to the marriage. This may also occur if a wife has or earns more than her husband does. In … Continue reading

Working Women a Contributing Factor in Marriage and Family Break-Ups

Working women are contributing to marriage and family break-ups. A recent survey in the United Kingdom came to this conclusion. They found after a study of British childhood that ‘women’s increasing economic independence from their male partners is contributing to family break-ups which is in turn damaging children.’ At the risk of being shot down in flames, I admit I’m old fashioned enough to agree. Yet, it really stands to reason. Depending on the type of job they have, women can be earning more than their men. Some men struggle to deal with that, as it makes them feel inferior. … Continue reading

Do You Love Your Spouse or Their Salary?

The other day Wayne and I got to talking about marriage, money, and respect. We’ve both known several people who divorced their spouses once they started bringing home the bigger paycheck. Specifically, women who divorced their husbands because they earned more than he did. “It has to do with respect,” Wayne said when we were talking about a particular friend. “She never had much respect for him to begin with. So once she started earning more, she lost what little she’d had.” “That’s pathetic!” I said. “If I ever made more than you it wouldn’t change how I felt about … Continue reading

The Ultimate Gift (2006)

Based on the faith-affirming novel by James Stovall, “The Ultimate Gift” is the story of one young man’s quest for a life of fun and his grandfather’s dreams of a better future for him. Jason Stevens (Drew Fuller) has never had to work for anything in his life. He’s got a trust fund, a mother who doles out money like candy, and he’s living large. His girlfriend loves his easy spending habits, and together they party until dawn with little thought about others. When Jason’s grandfather, Red (James Garner) passes away, the family gathers around like vultures, wanting to know … Continue reading

My Fascination with the Real Housewives of Orange County

Wayne might be fascinated with Cheaters, but I have my own guilty pleasure TV indulgence: Bravo’s the Real Housewives of Orange County. It plays off the success and popularity of other shows of similar, though fictional, ilk: ABC’s Desperate Housewives and Fox’s cancelled series the O.C. The Real Housewives, however, is a reality show following the lives of real women. The show’s name is sort of a misnomer, though. Some of the “housewives” don’t stay home at all. They not only work but are incredibly successful. In fact, if I’m not mistaken, two of them –Jeana and Vicki– own their … Continue reading

Two Women of Galilee – Mary Rourke

In the Book of Luke, 8:1-3, we read: “And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God, and the twelve were with Him. And certain women . . . and Joanna, the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward . . . and many others, which administered to him of their substance.” Who was Joanna, and how did the wife of Herod’s steward come to be a follower and supporter of Jesus Christ? This is the question posed and fictionally answered in Mary Rourke’s novel, “Two … Continue reading

The Work and the Glory III: A House Divided (2007)

When I first found out that “The Work and the Glory” series by Gerald Lund was being made into three movies, I was ecstatic. While the movies were, in some ways, everything I’d hoped for, they did fall short in other ways. The third movie is the perfect example of this. The Saints are now living in Kirtland, Ohio. Benjamin Steed still doesn’t know how he feels about the Church. He supports Joseph Smith, but as a man, not so much as a prophet. Nathan, his second-oldest son, follows Joseph with absolute devotion. Joshua, the oldest son, is still as … Continue reading
