Manti Te’o and the Girlfriend that Wasn’t – Part 1

Oh, as if my Notre Dame Fighting Irish haven’t suffered enough indignities due to their National Championship romp by the Crimson Tide, now a scandal has surfaced involving one of it’s most popular football players. Manti Te’o, in case you don’t know, was the Irish star linebacker.  A senior, he was nominated for the Heisman Trophy (he lost to Johnny Football) and no doubt coming off an undefeated season, was looking forward to all the NFL had to offer. Then, the bruising at the championship.  As if that weren’t enough, Te’o is now the center of a hoax scandal.  Through … Continue reading

Dinner In a Hurry, Your Way

I want out of the kitchen, the only problem is I love to eat. Also, there’s that whole starving to death thing if you don’t eat. Living in Utah there are so many wonderful things to see and do outdoors, I just need to figure out how to get out there. Making dinner can be the biggest time consumer of my evening. If I forgot to thaw something or I have nothing quick on hand, I just pick up the phone, pizza, sandwiches, or Chinese, all on speed dial. This is bad for both my wallet and my waist. There … Continue reading

A Day at the Zoo Part I

We have a zoo in our city. It is not a big zoo by any means, but it does have more than enough animals to entertain a toddler. I am not a particular fan of animals; I remember going to this same zoo as a child and being scared to death especially by the goats in the petting part of the zoo. The cost of admission to this zoo is more than a movie ticket (something my husband and I never spend money on). Thanks to my very generous in-laws, we have a year long family pass to the zoo … Continue reading

What to Do if You Don’t Have Dental Insurance

Many Americans are putting off making a dental appointment. It’s not because all of them have a phobia relating to dentistry. A large group of Americans avoids seeing their dentist because they do not have health insurance. If this describes you, there are some options. A survey called the 2011 Survey of Dental Care Affordability and Accessibility found that around 77% of Americans, who didn’t have dental insurance, delayed making a dental appointment. The reason was because of the cost of the dental care. People are afraid that they wouldn’t be able to afford to pay for the dental bills. … Continue reading

Genealogy Words You Don’t Know

What does that word mean? This is a question that genealogists are bound to ask themselves from time to time. When this happens, it is time to consult a genealogy dictionary to learn the meaning of that archaic word that you have never seen before. Genealogy research involves looking at old documents, and sorting through archives that hold collections of very old papers and vital records. Whenever you go digging through the past, there is the possibility that you will run across some words or phrases that you are unfamiliar with. Terminology that was commonly understood ages ago could have … Continue reading

Supporting Your Spouse through Grief

We all experience grief at some point in our lives—it’s part of being alive and human, having emotions, and loving. At times, the husband and wife will both go through the same grief—losing a child or the lesser pain of losing a badly needed job or a loved home. Other times, one spouse will go through a personal grief not quite as deeply felt by the other. In both circumstances, they need each other. If you are the spouse who is grieving, share what you need with your partner. Don’t expect him to just know what you’re going through. He … Continue reading

Does Facebook Kill Kids?

Fifty years. That’s how long a Florida mom will spend behind bars for shaking her 3-month-old son to death after his cries interrupted her FarmVille game on Facebook. A half century in prison for killing an innocent baby. Some say it’s not enough. Twenty-two-year-old Alexandra Tobias was given the sentence just last week as a judge wrapped up her murder case, which began last October. A couple of months ago the mom pleaded guilty to killing her infant son with her bare hands, and then lying to authorities to cover up his death. According to court records, Tobias told investigators … Continue reading

What Does Snowmobile Insurance Cover?

Winter time brings snow, unless you happen to live somewhere that is warm all year round. Once there is enough snow on the ground, many people decide that the time is right to go snowmobiling. Before you bundle up and head out into the cold, make sure that you have the proper protection. Snowmobile insurance is very important if you own a snowmobile. Every year, accidents happen that involve snowmobiles. Many accidents involve collisions between a snowmobile and a tree, (or other stationary object). There is no doubt that snowmobiling can be a dangerous sport. Allstate Insurance has some suggestions … Continue reading

Genealogy and Your Health

Working on putting together the genealogy of your family can be good for your health. Part of genealogy research involves learning the date of death for each of your ancestors. What did that person die from? Can your living relatives recall what an ancestor’s health was like? Answering these kinds of questions can help you to discern patterns. It is possible that your family has a tendency towards developing a certain disease, illness, or disorder. This kind of genealogy research might be thought of as a medical history of your family. Once you know what your genetics may hold, it … Continue reading

Frugal in Life, Frugal in Death

I recently came across an article that mentions that Costco and Walmart sells caskets. A Walmart casket can cost from $895.00 to $1799.00. They sligtly undercut the costs of Costco Caskets. Meanwhile, caskets from a funeral home starts at $2,255.00. As a frugal person, I think it would hurt my heart to know that an exhorbident amount was being spent at the end of my life. I would feel much better in knowing that at the very least, good sense was used in chosing my homecoming arrangements. It’s good to know that there are several ways of cutting standard funeral … Continue reading
