When a Parent Comes to Live with You

Family dynamics change when the child becomes the caretaker to his or her aging parent. In today's society, this is an issue that must be dealt with early on so when the time comes, difficulties will be minimized, thanks to good planning and preparation.

For most of us, our parents were good people who worked hard to provide for our needs. Our love for our parents is something that is strong and allows us to go the extra mile.

If one of your parents has passed away and the other needs a little more care and cannot be fully on their own, perhaps the time has come for them to move in with you. You've already discussed other alternative and moving them in is the best for now.

Just like any transition, a move for your parent will potentially cause some initial stress for both them and for your family. This is expected, but there are many nice benefits including spending more quality time together; bonding with your kids if you still have some living at home. If your parent is still mobile and healthy, he or she may be able to help with light housework and providing babysitting services when needed.

It's important to make the parent feel at home, and not like a stranger who's in the way. After all, what goes through their mind is feeling like they're going to be in your way, and intruding into your private life.

It's important for them to also maintain their own independence and privacy while living with you and your spouse. Before moving them in, communicate openly with your spouse and parent about all the pros and cons. Stress the benefits of the move, and keep a positive attitude about the whole arrangement. The greatest benefit of all is getting to spend the last years of their lives with them before they pass away.
