Where to Find Great Recipes from Kraft

What will you be feeding your family for dinner tonight? There are times when that is a rather difficult question to answer. It helps if you have plenty of recipes to choose from. Fortunately, there are many places to find recipes from Kraft. There was a time when people had to rely on cookbooks, women’s magazines, and the box of handwritten recipes that their mother and grandmother handed down to them for recipe ideas. Today, companies that make food products are very active online. This makes it really easy to find plenty of recipes that include products from your favorite … Continue reading

Have Some Mountain Dew Before a Test?

How do you feel about standardized testing? Chances are you aren’t an incredibly big fan of it. Children tend to strongly dislike taking standardized tests because it is stressful, confusing, frustrating, and very different from how their typical school day goes. Perhaps this is why a school in Florida found a controversial way to motivate students to take their standardized tests. Someone at Creel Elementary School in Florida came up with an unusual way to get students excited about taking the FCAT. The FCAT stands for “Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test”. A grandmother who learned about it contacted the local media. … Continue reading

Beating the Odds

Divorce has a wide array of effects on children. They are certainly faced with more hardships than your average child in a two parent home and have had to overcome things in their young life that they never should have had to endure. It can be difficult at times and affects all children differently. We’ve all heard the typical stereotypes of children from these broken homes. They don’t do as well in school, they are more likely to have behavior problems, they may struggle with their future relationships, and they are more likely to end up in jail. As a … Continue reading

Who is Your Model Mom?

My model mom has eight legs, five biological children, three adoptive ones, two dewy eyes and a gigantic heart of gold. In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m turning the spotlight on motivational moms who have made an impact on my parenting techniques. While there are many exceptional women out there raising kids in ways that warm the heart and stir the soul, this post highlights a unique mother I’ve admired since my daughter was a toddler. She embodies the fortitude of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta, the diplomacy of a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the flexibility of a Cirque … Continue reading

Tasty Traditions – Cookies and Family History

No matter what holiday your family is celebrating this time of year, one thing is probably a given. There are likely to be many sweet treats on your table that are not usually there throughout the year. Did you know that if you have European ancestors, they may have started baking Christmas cookies as far back in time as the 1500’s? Sweet treats have long been associated with celebrations throughout the year, as the ingredients used to make them like sugar and spices were too expensive for most people to have on hand all year long. The array of cookies, … Continue reading

Creating a Nest Egg

One thing that I’ve always struggled with as a single mom is finances. With a growing child there is always some unexpected expense so usually I was juggling, as my grandmother used to say “Robbing Peter to pay Paul.” The unfortunate part was that I didn’t learn anything from this for a long time. We struggled so much that when I had a little extra money I felt like we deserved a treat. That was all well and good, until the next financial crisis occurred. What I learned over time is that saving money should be the first thing I … Continue reading

Sugar Storm

Why no, I don’t think 8 a.m. is too early for a 100 Grand bar. Just don’t tell my kid I’m raiding her Halloween loot. Now, if someone could just invent a fun-size Whatchamacallit bar. Peanut-flavored crisp candy topped with a layer of caramel and dipped in milk chocolate. Forever and ever. Amen. It’s been 24 hours since a sugar storm, named trick-or-treat, rained down on our neighborhood, and the kids have yet to recover. Interestingly, this evening while my child, who is up to her eyeballs in chocolate-covered anything and everything, was rifling through her sugar stash (in search … Continue reading

Father and Daughter

Raising a child alone is hard, everyone knows that, and each child is unique so that makes it even harder, what works for someone else’s child may not work for yours. Also as a single parent there are additional issues, whether you are raising a boy or a girl, some things are just naturally harder. I only know about the challenges of raising a daughter alone, but I’m sure as a woman, it would be difficult to raise a son alone, obviously for different reasons. I have tried very hard to maintain a relationship with Hailey’s father because I believe … Continue reading

Oatmeal: A Simple Way To Increase Milk Supply

At a recent meeting with a group of young, breastfeeding mothers, I learned that oatmeal is supposed to boost milk supply. While it is not scientifically proven, many mothers report an increase in milk production after eating oatmeal, or products containing oatmeal. I’ve never had a problem with too little milk; in fact, the only “problem” I’ve had is too much milk. I’ve always counted myself lucky that supply was never an issue, because I have a strong desire to breastfeed well past my daughter’s first birthday. Although I’ve never had a problem with too little milk, I want to … Continue reading

Maybe Fathers Should Not Punish Their Daughters

After reading Extreme Punishments by Michelle Cheplic I wondered to myself, maybe fathers should not dole out punishments to daughters at all. When dealing with correcting daughters, fathers tend to make one of two fatal mistakes. 1. They let the daughter get away with everything in an effort to be the good or fun parent. In this case, the girl learns that men are pushovers and spends her life trying to manipulate men. 2. They not only break her out of bad habits but they also break her will. In this case, the daughter learns that men can be cruel … Continue reading
