Applying for Medicare Part B – An Update

Earlier this year, my husband applied for Medicare Part B. He contacted Social Security, and was sent an application to fill out and return. He filled out, and mailed, that application in March. Yesterday, he got a letter that said he had missed the deadline for this year. Obviously, something was wrong! Most of the time, people who are eligible for Medicare receive Part A and Part B at the same time. To make a long story short, that is not how things happened for my husband. He is not age 65 or older, but is receiving Medicare because he … Continue reading

Kitchen Playdates by Lauren Bank Deen

The other day at the library, I just had to pick up this colorful book, Kitchen Playdates by Lauren Bank Deen. The cover shows happy kids busy in the kitchen cooking and the book promised ideas and recipes that could be made with kids. My kids have always loved to cook with me, especially when it comes to baking. They like to measure, stir, chop and more. One of my daughter’s favorite possessions is her monogramed apron, and my youngest son contents himself with a towel wrapped around his waste. My oldest son begs for more responsibility in the kitchen … Continue reading

A Blind Date Leads to Love and Years

I never went on a blind date, although I tried (unsuccessfully, I might add) to arrange one or two. But for one couple a blind date turned out to be just the beginning. That blind date was over 50 years ago. This year the couple, Nancy and James Hibbert of Australia, achieved something statistics show only about five percent achieve – they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage the Hibberts, who live at Culburra Beach, replied ‘give and take.’ And really, that sums it up in a nutshell. That’s exactly the … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for September 17-23

After a bit of a hiatus, the Marriage Blog Week in Review is back! Karri and I will be taking turns posting it. As you might have surmised, this is my week to do it. So without further ado, here’s what we covered on: Monday, September 17 Karri pondered the connection (or lack thereof as the case may be) between husbands and household chores. I detailed how Wayne and I celebrated our 12th anniversary and how happy Wii be. Tuesday, September 18 I shared my single fantasy, the reality of which I’m sort of living and there isn’t much fantastic … Continue reading

Pop Culture Updates: Harry, Sampson and “The Simpsons”

JUST WILD ABOUT HARRY We all know by now that Harry Potter, the fictional boy wizard, is a pop culture icon. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” smashed all sales records this weekend (8.3 million copies of the book were sold in the first 24 hours). But, there’s another record the book has earned that you may not have heard about. According to the National Braille Press, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” was made available to the blind at the same time sighted readers could purchase their print versions. The Boston-based publisher says that is an extremely rare occurrence … Continue reading

What is a Blind Date?

A blind date is a date between two people who have never met and typically know little or nothing about each other. Friends, family or co-workers usually try to arrange a blind date in order to hook up two people whom they do know and care about and want to see happy. Participating in blind dates is more popular than most people may think. On university campus settings, blind dates happen as often as 1 date in 10 though whether they are labeled blind dates or mixers or through fraternity/sorority events. Blind dates may not always lead to true love, … Continue reading

The Enigma of the Wi-Fi Allergy

Schools have started getting better about understanding allergies. Some schools have banned peanut butter in an effort to keep kids with peanut allergies safe. The Wi-Fi allergy, however, is still an enigma. What is an allergy? According to the Mayo Clinic, allergies occur when a person’s immune system reacts to a foreign substance (pollen, bee venom, peanuts) that doesn’t cause a reaction in most people. Symptoms of allergies can range from sneezing to hives to anaphylaxis. Allergies cannot be cured, but some can be managed. The best way to manage an allergy is for people to avoid the things that … Continue reading

Be Smart When Dealing with Discounts

Paper coupons, online coupon codes, group rates, and military discounts are spectacular ways to save big bucks when traveling to amusement parks.  However, not all discounts are authentic.  Each year, thousands of complaints are filed with the Better Business Bureau regarding counterfeit deals.  To protect yourself from getting ripped off this summer, consider the following: Research:  When you see a coupon that appears too good to be true, go online and check it out.  Sites such as RipoffReport.com feature fraudulent coupon offers.  The popular website also gives tips on how to avoid using expired coupon codes.  It also has a … Continue reading

Housework and Cooling Costs

Keep cool, get your housework done and save on cooling costs all at the same time. Today is going to be  scorcher! Even though it is only May, the temperatures are in the high 80s with high humidity. It makes things very uncomfortable, and the air conditioning will need to go on if we don’t want to all melt into little puddles on the floor. When the days get like this, the housework rules have to change a bit to accommodate the heat and humidity. Because our window air conditioners take up a lot of energy, I have to be … Continue reading
