The Complete List of Wedding Anniversary Gifts: From Year 1 to 100

On Sunday my husband and I will celebrate our 12th wedding anniversary. I got to wondering what kind of gift is associated with year 12. I knew year one was paper, the 25th Silver, and (thanks to his grandparents) the 50th is Gold and 60th Diamonds. But what’s 12? Or any of the others for that matter? So I started hunting around. Another blogger had my same train of thought a year or so ago and wrote Anniversary Gifts and Their Meanings, but she only covered anniversaries one through ten. So I dug farther and eventually found what I was looking … Continue reading

Personal Touches

One of the most touching layouts in my wedding scrapbook is a double page design filled with original poems written by family and friends. Granted, several of my family members are professional writers and a good chunk of my friends have careers in journalism, but you don’t have to be schooled in the world of prose in order to add a personal touch to a scrapbook page. Heck, you don’t even have to be proficient in rhyming in order to pen a poem that will make an impact on someone’s life. One of the easiest ways to spice up an … Continue reading

Take That Time

The secret to a long and happy marriage according to a local couple, Betty and Ernest, who recently celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary is, ’it’s not easy. Particularly during those years of child rearing,’ Betty said. That’s the reality. Although children are a great blessing and I wouldn’t be without either of mine for one moment, they can put extra pressure on a marriage. This may be even more noticeable if children are close together in age. They will take up a lot of time. Sometimes it means one or the other or both of the couple are busy doing … Continue reading

Predetermining Choices in Marriage

When one person makes most of the choices regarding the wedding, a pattern for the marriage can be set up. In your marriage does one partner determine the marriage choices? Did one person determine where you would live? Or was it a joint decision? It may not be as big a decision as that. It may be in myriad little decisions, like what you do in your free time, what you watch on TV, or what movies you see. Marriage is about give and take. Marriage is a blending together of two people with sometimes different tastes to make one … Continue reading

12 Creative Date Night Ideas That Won’t Break the Budget

Is your marriage feeling stale? It’s easy to get so caught up with the everyday that we forget to make time for each other and to make each other feel special. To bring the romance back, here are some suggestions for date nights that won’t break the budget. 1. Turn off the lights and light candles. Turn off the TV and put on some romantic music. Curl up on the sofa with perhaps a glass of wine and listen to music. 2. Pack a picnic dinner and head for a favorite beach. Watch the moon rise over the water. After … Continue reading

Symbols of Love

The other day I wrote how a perfect red camellia was, for me, a symbol of love. One other time it was a vase of sweet peas. For many people flowers, in particular roses, are a symbol of love. For my father roses were anything but symbols of love. He hated roses. When Mum and Dad bought a house with beds of roses in it, every one of those roses were dug out by Mum since Dad had a bad heart and couldn’t do the digging. Their removal and absence was, in a way, a symbol of love. Of course … Continue reading

Author Interview – Anne Bradshaw

Today’s interview features Anne Bradshaw, LDS British novelist and the author of several magazine articles. She is joining us for an exclusive discussion about herself, her work, and her future projects. Anne, thank you for taking the time to meet with us. You have such a lovely accent; where are you from, originally, and how did you come to live here in the United States? I was born in Caernarvon, Wales as my parents moved there from London during the war. Three years later, we moved to Cheshire in Northern England. I grew up, attended school, and married there. My … Continue reading

Marriage Hints: Flowers Have Meaning

Gentlemen, this is may seem like it’s just for you, but it’s also a little lesson for the ladies. I found it fascinating studying some of the meanings behind flowers, especially back in the days of planning my wedding. At the time, in all the wedding plans I was making, there was only one certainty I had – that certainty was that my bridal bouquet needed to contain a combination of the flowers my husband used to propose. The day he proposed, he sent me three white roses, six yellow roses and a dozen red roses. The white was for … Continue reading

Miss Julia Hits the Road — Ann B. Ross

This is the fourth installment of the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross. As if it wasn’t enough that Sam hired a flirty nurse to take care of him while he recovered from a broken leg, now he has done the unthinkable. As soon as he was up and around again, he bought a Harley-Davidson Road King and parked it in front of Miss Julia’s house, and he wants her to go on a ride with him. Something is definitely wrong with Sam. He’s been sending her flowers and writing bad poetry, and he’s even taken to wearing cowboy … Continue reading
