Broken Ring, Broken Heart

Could there be anything worse than losing a wedding ring? I’m not sure, but there’s something that’s equally as disturbing: Losing the diamond from your engagement ring. (The real answer is actually: “Plenty!” I found that out the hard way, though. The day after I lost my diamond was D-day.) The Discovery The night before the D-day oncologist appointment, while Wayne hung out with my mom, I took the opportunity to make a run to Target. After that I needed to stop at Publix. It was en route from Target to Publix that I went to scratch an itch on … Continue reading

Can a Ring be Given Twice?

My last several articles have focused on the etiquette of giving and receiving wedding bands and engagement rings. In the most recent article I questioned who should keep the ring if an engagement was broken off. Should the woman be allowed to keep it or does the man get it back? Some of you responded with your thoughts and opinions to the situation. In some cases, the man does get the ring back. It may be that the woman willingly handed it over or it may be that he asked for the ring back. Either way, he has it. Suppose … Continue reading

Wearing Your Ring after Divorce

Dating, marriage, and divorce all seem to have many unspoken rules and characteristics. They almost have an etiquette all of their own. There are questions that people face over how long you should wait until you kiss, how long should you be engaged, and when it is okay to date again after divorce. In addition to these there are many many more dilemmas that relationships can bring up. One such question that I have to address to you today deals with divorce. In a previous article, I discussed a great new business that I discovered. The business sells miniature coffins … Continue reading

Single-Parent Potty Training

Potty training is a daunting task for any parent. Every child is different and they are all ready at different times. Some are ready as early as 18 months old, others are closer to 4 years old. Listen to your child. They’ll let you know when they are ready. My son was two and a half when he first started getting really excited about potty training. I think he went over 15 times that first night just to hear Mommy and Daddy’s excitement. He called Grandma over and over again to tell her all about it. The next month we … Continue reading

Learning about Coping Gracefully from My Pets

Over in Marriage I wrote about how this year has been one blow after the other and I feel like I’m living under a black cloud. A string of them to be exact. No sooner does one pass than another one moves in and pours on me some more. I don’t even get a chance to fully dry off. I’ve been trying to cope as well as I can, but I have to be honest. My defenses are wearing down. Yesterday I got another blow. My dad’s girlfriend called to say she was at St. Anthony’s with my dad. He … Continue reading

You’ve Got to Tell Her (Or Him) That You Love Her (Or Him)

This afternoon I finally had the chance to see Enchanted. Part of me had wanted to see it when it came out last summer, but I wasn’t sure I’d like it and didn’t want to risk dragging Wayne to it. But then I caught some of the songs that were performed during the Oscars, and I also watched part of it on the flight home from my mom’s house (on someone else’s seatback screen a few aisle in front of me). It looked pretty cute so I Netflixed it and ended up liking it. (So did Wayne, who watched with … Continue reading

Celebrity REAL or RUMOR: Jessica on the Mend, Love’s Baby Bump and NKOTB Ready to Rock NYC

JESSICA ON THE MEND Just in case you care… singer Jessica Simpson is out of the hospital. The former reality TV star was reportedly taken to the hospital late Friday after suffering a fever (yes, a fever). According to reports, the 27-year-old actress was taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and was later diagnosed with a kidney infection. In Touch magazine is reporting that the singer didn’t want to take any chances with her health since she just returned from Iraq where she performed for the troops. (Wonder if she thought she caught a foreign illness from American soldiers?) And Simpson … Continue reading

Engagement Break Ups

In my last article I began a discussion on etiquette after divorce. In this article I want to back up a step from marriage. In this article, I am looking for opinions on etiquette after engagement break-ups. Some couples rush into engagement and then discover that perhaps they are not ready to get married. Some couples are engaged and then have irreconcilable differences and break up. Just like in marriage, some partners have affairs or cheat on their fiancé. For whatever reason that it is, some couples end their engagements. While these couples are lucky that the marriage ended before … Continue reading
