Nursing Until 1 Year, and beyond

I wrote an article recently called, The Truth About Nursing. It can shed some light on what nursing is like in those first few months. It seems that these days, people who nurse past 6 months are very rare. I find that more and more of my friends are saying to me, “Wow! I can’t believe you breastfed that long!” and other things like that. I do feel lucky that I was able to nurse both of my children until they were 14 months old. Here is another fact that I realized the other day about my own nursing experience. … Continue reading

The Miracle of Pregnancy and the Struggle of Waiting

Earlier this week I talked about the pain and confusion associated with experiencing an unwanted pregnancy. Equally distressing is the agony of trying to get pregnant, dreaming of a child, and month after month staring at countless negative home pregnancy tests. Some would say this pain is much worse than facing an unwanted pregnancy. When my husband and I decided to get married, we set a date and a time, and that is when we got married. But when we decided to start a family, we quickly realized we were operating under a completely different set of rules. Even if … Continue reading

Untraditional Scrapbooks

You may feel as though you’ve seen just about every themed scrapbook imaginable, but when it comes to album sizes, you haven’t seen unique until you’ve laid your eyes on a scrapbook made from a standard Rolodex. Yes, a Rolodex. Who knew the plastic filing device, which holds index cards and spins for convenience, could be transformed into a place to keep your treasured memories? I got my first taste of the Rolodex scrapbook during a workshop I attended just after Labor Day. The seminar was designed to get avid crafters to experiment with untraditional means of scrapbooking. Rather than … Continue reading

What Love Is

We’ve looked at what love is not. Now let’s look at what love is. One of the best descriptions ever written about love comes from the bible- from 1 Corinthians 13. These are words often read at wedding ceremonies. ‘Love is patient, love is kind, it does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeing, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.’ In other words it … Continue reading

Helping Children Get Started With Scrapbooking

Although scrapbooking is a hobby seen mostly with adults, many children and teenagers enjoy creating their own unique books. I have always tried to set aside photographs that I want to keep but might not incorporate into a scrapbook, or I always made sure I had doubles on hand. These were pictures that my children could use to create their own special scrapbooks. Don’t think that it’s just girls who will enjoy this activity. When my children were younger, they put together an entire book of their own. My son was in the 3rd grade at the time. Most children, … Continue reading

Effects of House Break-ins on Young Children

Have you had your house broken into? If the statistics are to be believed then there is a pretty good chance that you either have been or you will be. Although a robbery is a traumatic event for anyone to go through, the effect on young children is often longer term than that for adults. When your home is broken into there are several effects that the incident has on the homeowner. The most obvious one is when treasured or valuable objects are taken. Then there is the sheer inconvenience of having to deal with insurance companies (if you are … Continue reading

Learn from Dogs

Those of us who are married can learn a lot from dogs. Dog owners know how faithful loyal and loving these four footed friends can be. Their love and loyalty does not depend on what we do for them. They will love us regardless and not hesitate to show it. In the words of John Grogan from Marley and Me ‘A dog doesn’t care ifyou’re rich or poor, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he’ll give you his. How many people can you say that about/? How many people make you feel special, extraordinary?’ Yet shouldn’t that be … Continue reading

Who Comes First in Your Marriage?

When it comes to a choice between your spouse and your children, who comes first? You spouse should be the one who comes first in your concerns, thoughts and plans. He or she is the one you are married to, that you have committed to live your life with, ‘for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer.’ The children will grow up and leave home and need you less. If you make them the centre of your lives what will you have left when they leave? Yes, I missed our children when they left … Continue reading
