Extended Love Day Travel Deals

February is a notoriously slow period for the hotel industry.  This translates into a golden opportunity for frugal travelers looking to save a bundle on a much-needed romantic escape.  Just because Valentine’s Day is over, doesn’t mean you can’t sneak away with your sweetie on a luxurious weekend trip without breaking the bank. Many hotels around the country are extending their Love Day-themed deals through the end of the month, including: Coronado Island Marriott Resort and Spa:  The upscale property is offering a money-saving deal dubbed the “Coronado Island Romance” package.  It features deluxe accommodations in a bay view room, … Continue reading

In A Sea of Couples

Sometimes I feel like the odd man out. It seems that everywhere I go people are coupled up. All the kids have father’s in the home, it may not be their birth father, but they have a male presence in their home. It makes me sad that we don’t have that. It also makes it hard to go places, I’m always the only single person. I’m not sure how that happened, I know lots of single women but it seems that when I see them, it’s because a bunch of us single women get together. Considering how common single parents … Continue reading

Holidays, Travel, and Family Expectations

Holidays can be tricky for anyone, in any family situation. Married couples without kids, however, face a special conundrum: with whom to spend the day(s)? Again, this can be tough for anyone, but childless marrieds face a particular pressure: you don’t have kids, so it falls to you to drive sometimes long distances to attend the family get-together. Of course that returns us to the initial question: with whose family do we spend the holidays? We pick one side of the family for Thanksgiving and the other for Easter, because Jon’s parents and my parents live far enough away from … Continue reading

Get Started on the Appreciation Box for Valentine’s Day

Happy New Year! In 2009 you can vow to better appreciate your spouse. Here is one idea that I adapted from a parenting discipline method. it works wonderfully for married couples, too. I call it the appreciation box. As you are cleaning up from the holidays, packing away the decorations and gathering up all of the wrapping for the recycling pile, pick out a small box to save. It could be a shoe box or even a square tissue box. Take this box and decorate it for Valentine’s Day. Label it “The Appreciation Box.” Yes, I know we have another … Continue reading

How Do You Feel about Valentine’s Day?

Happy Valentine’s Day!! That’s right today is the big day. Many people have anticipated this day for several weeks now. Others have greatly dreaded it. And some feel very indifferent about it. Some cannot wait until it passes while others simply ignore it altogether. Many conversations, commercials, and businesses have lately been directed toward Valentine’s Day. Yesterday, I overheard a few ladies talking about how they do not celebrate Valentine’s Day. They commented on how they feel that the holiday is silly and it is a waste to spend the money on roses and candy and balloons. The ladies I … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day Proposalversaries: Facts and Figures

Yes, today is Valentine’s Day, but if you happened to get proposed to on Valentine’s Day then it’s also your Proposalversary. I was curious about how many couple’s get engaged on Valentine’s Day so I tried to find some statistics. I was kind of surprised by what I learned. For one thing, who knew the U.S. Census Bureau kept (sort of) certain statistics of the nature I was looking for? For another, there were at least two other days I hadn’t even considered that were quite popular proposal days. I listed these and all my other revelations below. Did You … Continue reading

Taking Emergency Valentine’s Day Action

Eeeek! Turns out Wayne’s going to be home for Valentine’s Day after all. I wasn’t prepared for that. He was supposed to be out of town working a deal until Friday. What’s a wife to do with virtually no time to plan anything? Well, to be honest, I’m not totally unprepared. You remember all those personalized Valentine gift articles I wrote? The ones about gifts to delight your Valentine, inspire intimacy, display around your home, and hang on your walls? After I wrote them, I went shopping. That’s right. Wayne’s getting A Valentine Message in a Bottle, a L-O-V-E floral … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review for January 28 – February 3

Last week Lyn and I said goodbye to January and welcomed February. Here’s what we wrote on: Monday, January 28 Internet Infidelity Leads to Attempted Hit A married woman tried to use Craigslist to off her equally married lover…who she’d met online. Successful Serious Discussions with Your Mate Lyn offers suggestions for setting a positive tone for starting serious discussions. Proxy Marriages Only four states allow these types of marriages, which don’t require both parties even be in attendance to wed. Tuesday, January 29 Personalized Gifts to Delight Your Valentine Once again I was shopping the catalogs and found items … Continue reading

Valentine’s Day: Special Delivery

What will you do for your sweetie(s) for Valentine’s Day? Will you have something special delivered to work or school to say ‘be mine’? A lot of thought (not to mention cash) goes into picking out just the right things and having them delivered. I like thoughtful ideas rather than extravagant. I won’t be spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I won’t be sending six foot tall Teddy Bears, dozens of roses, or 10 pound heart shaped boxes of chocolate to school for my kids. I’ll just find a little something that’s cute and sweet that says Happy Valentine’s Day … Continue reading
