Top Tips for a Lasting Marriage from Those Who Know.by Dale Harcombe | More from this Blogger 23 Sep 2009 08:39 PM Want to learn some secrets to a lasting marriage from a couple who know what they are talking about? Then read on. Despite experiencing good and bad times, and life's ups and downs, Bill and Muriel McGee this week celebrated 60 years of married life. This achievement earned them congratulatory cards from Queen Elizabeth 2nd and the Governor General of Australia, as well as a bouquet of flowers from our local politician Jo Gash. So to what do Bill and Muriel attribute their long and lasting marriage? 2. 'It's all about give and take.' 3. 'Having the ability to talk to one another.' It sounds remarkably like some of the suggestions that have been put forward over time here in the marriage blog, doesn't it? Still it's good to hear those suggestions and tips re-iterated from a couple who's been married a fair bit longer than Mick and I have. Interestingly, they were both relatively young when married. Muriel was nineteen and Bill was twenty one, so again it calls into question the idea that young marriages don't stand the test of time. This marriage also survived despite Bill being away in the army for the first four years of their marriage. After he got out of the army they then worked together in the Huskisson newsagents. This I guess explodes another myth that married couples shouldn't work together if they want to stay married. When Muriel sums up her life and the point at which they are at now, she said, 'We have a wonderful life really.' It sounds like they also have interests in common like gardening and socializing with friends. But they still find time to exercise by playing golf, which they have been doing for 45 years. So they are still keeping their brains and bodies active. So, if you want a marriage that stands the test of time, why not adopt their suggestions and maybe one day you'll make it to 60 years married too. It is certainly something to aim for.
