The Top Five Reasons I Married A European Man

When it came time to get married, I didn't mess around. I knew Europe was in my future, so, rather than being content with a visit here and there, I snagged myself a European man. That way, I could bring Europe home every single day.

Okay, so that's not really how it happened. Actually, I was 20 and came to California to visit my sister. Long story short, I met my future husband during the visit, and three months later, I was in California to stay. Impulsive? Of course. Stupid? You might say-but it all worked out for me. Ten years later and we've been married for almost seven years, have two beautiful children (which I call my little Turkicans), and are still in love.

My husband is from Turkey. And yes, I've gotten to visit twice. It's beautiful. So what are the benefits to being married to a European man?

Laughter-though he studied English for nearly a decade before coming to the US to get his Master's Degree, my husband and I still sometimes miscommunicate. I once said someone was moping around the house. My husband thought I meant, "mopping" and envisioned them with a mop or broom.

Trips to Exotic Lands-it's true, when you marry someone from another county, you'll likely get to visit that country. The experience of seeing new cultures, meeting new people, and being introduced to new worlds is wonderful.

A Last Name No One Can Pronounce-okay, maybe this isn't a benefit, but it sure is a conversation starter! I went from Francis to Ipcizade and since then I've been asked countless times how to pronounce my name, which ultimately sparks a conversation about Turkey.

Cultured Children-My children will have the unique advantage of being part of two cultures. Many parents want their children to learn about various cultures. Mine will be lucky enough to have another culture presented to them on a daily basis.

The Food!-Have you tasted Turkish food? It's the best in the world. My stomach is very, very thankful for my husband.

Whether you marry a European, an American, or someone from another culture, laughing about your differences, exploring each other's family traditions and history, and having a willingness to learn about one another can truly make marriage an enjoyable ride.
