U.S. Birthrate Increased Due to Older Moms

The overall birthrate in the United States has increased for the first time in seven years. In addition, the birthrate among teens has dropped. Where is the increase coming from? It turns out that the slight increase in births is due to older moms. The Verge reported some data from a report created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Part of the report noted the birthrate in the United States for 2013 and 2014. In 2013, there were 62.5 births per 1,000 women. In 2014, that number slightly increased to 63 births per 1,000 women. The CDC … Continue reading

Chick-fil-A War Continues

To eat at Chick-fil-A or not? Suddenly, THAT is the question. The whole outrage against or support for (depending on your views) Chick-fil-A thing continues. The whole thing started when Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy told Baptist Press in an interview that the company is against gay marriage. Naturally, that made some celebs (Ed Helms being the latest to voice his opinion) call for a boycott. Several LGBT groups also called for boycotts. Philadelphia City Councilman James Kenney said, “There is no place for this type of hate in our great City of Brotherly and Sisterly Affection.” Boston Mayor Thomas Menino … Continue reading

Supreme Court to Hear Case About Medicaid Cuts

The Supreme Court will soon hear a case regarding Medicaid. There is a question about whether or not doctors, hospitals, and patients, can sue when their state decides to cut the funding involved with Medicaid. This is a much tricker situation than you might assume. Medicaid is complicated. There is a federal Medicaid law that creates a cooperative between the federal government and individual state governments. The federal government provides each state with some funding, and the states use the money to provide medical care for people who are poor, elderly, or disabled. Each state gets a different amount of … Continue reading

How to Parent Adult Step Children

Almost thirty years ago, Robert married a woman who had five grown children. No big deal, right? They ranged in age from mid-twenties to mid-thirties, so they had all been on their own for many years. They appeared to be well-adjusted, independent, responsible adults. They lived locally, and Robert and his wife socialized with them on a regular basis. So what was the problem? It turns out that there were many, but primary among them was the fact that his wife’s family was, what the shrinks would call, enmeshed. They were ‘all up in’ one another’s business—they spoke to one … Continue reading

What Can You Do? -Part 2

One of the most important ways of helping our children learn about relationships is by setting them a positive example. Guys especially you need to be careful about the way you react, talk about and treat women. It needs to be in a respectful manner rather than objectifying women as sex objects. But it’s not just the guys these days. I’ve met my share of women who want to objective guys and talk about what a cute butt they have etc and they’re not all young women either. If we want our children to grow up with a healthy respect … Continue reading

Three Ms You Don’t Want in Marriage

Yesterday we looked at some Ms to incorporate into marriage. Today I’ve got three Ms you definitely don’t want in your marriage Manipulative We’ve all seen then the wives who manipulate their husbands with tears and emotional blackmail and acts designed to get what they want. We see it in those who manipulate their spouse into doing what they want when they want it, using sex or whatever other means at their disposal to get their own way. Manipulative people often use tactics to make the other person feel guilty, if they don’t comply. They use silent treatment or lies … Continue reading

When Friends Divorce

When a couple divorces it can affect not only them but friends as well. Mick and I found this years ago, when a couple we were friends with divorced. We used to get together on a regular basis with this couple for a meal and to play cards – five hundred was usually the game of choice. We thought we were good friends and would have said they appeared to have a happy marriage. Then one evening we got a phone call to say they wouldn’t be coming. Soon after that one of them rang to say that they were … Continue reading

Long Island, NY Getting Ready to Ban BPA

A county in Long Island, New York may just be the first to ban baby bottles and sippy cups that contain the chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA). BPA has been shown in many studies to have adverse affects on the developmental growth of babies. BPA can leak from sippy cups and baby bottles into food and drink. Suffolk County legislature approved the ban unanimously, now it is up to Steve Levy, the County Executive to sign it into law. This would make Suffolk County the very first in the nation to actually ban BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups. Other state … Continue reading
