The Pleasure of a Romantic Movie
by Mary Ann Romans | More from this Blogger
It is funny how things work out. Last night, my husband and I had a rare couple of hours to ourselves. It hasn't been easy lately. With family and friends dropping over for the holidays, and me working in the evenings after dinner, we seem to keep missing some alone time.
So back to last night. We collapsed on the couch together and before we could even consciously decide how we wanted to spend the rest of the evening, we got sucked into a movie on cable television. I got sucked in first when I turned the television on for noise to sooth our youngest to sleep (things can be too quiet for him now after the flurry of the holidays, and he'll need some time to adjust), and my husband got sucked in when he came in to retrieve our youngest son and take him up to bed.
The movie was P.S. I Love You, and it is about a woman who receives love letters from her husband after he passes. The letters encourage her to move on, forgive, take risks and remember the person she once was. Needless to say, I was a bit teary-eyed at some parts, although I didn't want to admit it at the time.
So, the serendipity part of all of this is seeing Dale's blog about how watching romantic movies can negatively affect your marriage. I agree with her that I don't think this is necessarily true. During the movie we cuddled, we laughed, we talked, and we both felt blessed that we were lucky enough to be able to married to each other and not receiving letters because of a parting. Okay, so maybe the romantic movie also has to have a bit of tragedy to it?
"I don't think that will be our fate," my husband said. "I know that whatever we are meant to do, whatever journey we take, we are supposed to do it together."
How can I not love this man?
