Another Reason to Fear the School Lunch

In general, whenever someone uses the phrase “school lunch”, it causes people to shudder. These meals often taste horrible, and are less than nutritious. It has been revealed that the infamous pink slime is actually being added to the ground beef served at schools. No one knows which schools have it. Parents who choose to homeschool have many valid reasons for doing so. Maybe you want your kids to be raised in a culture that matches your faith. You can probably provide a better learning environment for your children that what is offered at many public schools. Homeschooling means that … Continue reading

Another Take on Gold

We keep hearing people talk about gold. I had a question to pose to my friend, financial advisor John Hauserman of RetirementQuest. I asked, “I keep seeing people advise us to buy gold, but I have a question. What if I end up with all kinds of gold, but there’s nothing to spend it on? What if no one will take my gold? What other ways do you advise us to prepare for future economic downturns?” John replied, “I am really glad you asked this question. While someone could write an entire book on this subject, which I actually did … Continue reading

The Not-So Sexy Side of Teen Sex

You had to see this one coming. From the very first minute I saw Dr. Drew Pinksy’s new primetime HLN show last month, I knew it would be just a matter of time before his peeps from MTV would show up to chat. For the record it took exactly 29 days. The good doc had to wait less than a month to parade out the mega-popular teen moms, who went from complete obscurity to tabloid fodder after getting knocked up by their boyfriends, and letting MTV document the tumult that ensued in the series “16 and Pregnant” and the spin-off, … Continue reading

Are you related to the Presidents?

Are you related to any of the Presidents of the United States of America? It can be very exciting to discover that there is someone famous in your family tree. Today, I learned that if you are related to any U.S. President, you might very well be related to all of them. My husband and I went to the California Mid State Fair. This is something we enjoy doing every summer. We like to go and take a look at the farm animals, and to see the reptile show. It’s fun to see what the many vendors are selling each … Continue reading

Curb Shopping for Others Mission

I haven’t really been a curb shopper lately. Years ago, I used to go out with a clever friend who was really into curb shopping. It was very deliberate. But just yesterday, my family and I rediscovered curb shopping, in a sense, as a sort of little family mission. Let me explain. Have you heard about that family who decided to go on a hunt for loose change out in the world and then donate whatever they find to charity? They posted a website and listed how much money they found. I tried to find this website, but I cannot, … Continue reading

Swine Flu Vaccine and Side Effects

As promised, October has arrived with the first batches of the swine flu vaccine. The World Health Organization rolled out the first doses of the vaccine in China, soon to be followed by Australia, the United States, and parts of Europe. Four out of the thirty-nine thousand people vaccinated in China reported mild side effects. That works out to approximately one in every ten thousand people getting the shot — not surprising, according to WHO officials. When large numbers of people are getting a vaccine, side effects are to be expected. Once the swine flu vaccine hits the United States, … Continue reading

When Your Child Swallows a Coin

Well it finally happened in my household. One of my younger children swallowed a coin. I’ve heard many stories from friends swallowing coins, but I have always been pretty diligent (lucky), and it never happened to us. Until yesterday that is. I was in the family room late in the afternoon, putting on lights and thinking I would find some entertainment for the three kids while I attended to dinner. My oldest had just finished his homework, my husband was not yet home, and this is always the “hectic” time in my house. My four-year-old daughter came into the room … Continue reading

Do You Compliment Each Other?

I’m not talking about giving each other compliments. I’m talking about how you fit together. Yesterday I wrote about how Wayne and I are opposites, but not. Today I’m going to consider another side of the opposite’s coin. Ying and Yang Those familiar with Chinese philosophy know that ying and yang are opposite, but complementary, forces. I liked a few of the phrases in Wikipedia about ying and yang: “unity of opposites” and “two opposing and, at the same time, complementary (completing) aspects of any one phenomenon.” Completing… Now there’s a concept begging to be dwelled upon. “You Complete Me” … Continue reading

Just Because I’m a Mother, Doesn’t Mean I Want to Parent Adults Too

Recently, I was talking with another forty-plus single parent and we were talking about dating (of course)–we started commiserating about the fact that we would like to meet and date other “grown-ups”–for some reason, we had both drawn people into our lives that assumed that since we were mothers/parents, we would be willing to take care of everything and everyone in addition to our own children and families. The fact is, at least for me, it was just the opposite. Since I already am a parent, I have pretty high expectations of the other adults I allow into my life; … Continue reading

Another Look at the Autism and Juvenile Diabetes Connection

As most of my readers are aware, I have two sons with juvenile diabetes (type 1) and another son with autism. For many years, I believed that our family was somehow unlucky in the roulette-wheel of life. I couldn’t imagine these two conditions which seem so different could be linked. I Love Hearing From Parents! For me, one of the most rewarding things about blogging for Families.com has been the opportunity to receive personal emails from mothers and fathers in all parts of the USA, and even England, Germany, Russia, and Australia. I’ve been surprised at the number of responses … Continue reading
