What’s Ahead for 2011?

I’m sure I’m not the only person looking ahead at the new year with a combination of excitement about all the possibilities and apprehension about the situation we find ourselves in, economically. You can hardly turn on a news station without seeing self-proclaimed financial gurus sharing their thoughts on this, that, and the other thing, while no one knows who the experts really are any more. But here are some facts that we need to face as we make our goals and plans for the coming twelve months: 1. Unemployment rates are skyrocketing. There are currently six million Americans who … Continue reading

The Number 1 Attitude

The more I thought about that research and the claims that self control could be bad and have negative effects, the more it seemed to me it is just another excuse for selfishness. The simple fact is our society promotes selfishness. Advertising gurus have fed us the lie ‘it’s all about you,’ and society has swallowed it. The ads tell us, ‘you’re the most important person,’ or ‘you’re worth it.’ So is it any wonder people then go into marriage with the attitude of what they can get out of it rather than what they can give. I was talking … Continue reading

Will Changing Attitudes Toward Disabilities Affect the Future of International Adoption in China?

My last blog featured another profile of an elite athlete who was adopted—Jessica Tatiana Long, who was adopted from a Russian orphanage at 13 months of age, and had her legs amputated below the knee when she was 18 months old. She competed last week in The Paralympic Games in Beijing. These Games have brought changes to China, in both infrastructure and attitudes toward the disabled. Last May I wrote a blog about Chinese people applying to adopt earthquake orphans. This also represented a big change. Traditional beliefs in many parts of China included the importance of a pure bloodline, … Continue reading

Rule Number 2: You Get What You Give

Last week I covered Rule Number 1, which was there’s no such thing as a perfect marriage. This week I’m going to examine another rule, the “get what you give” principle. ”This one sounds familiar…” It should. I preach “get what you give” every chance I get. Why? Because I know it’s one hundred percent effective. Take an article I wrote last October: How a Positive Attitude Affects Your Relationship. I dared you to practice harnessing the power of a positive attitude the next time your relationship was in need of a mood shift. Did you try it? If not, … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 1:6-9

In verse five, we read that Lehi did pray with all his heart on behalf of his people. Today as we move into verse six, we’ll see the result of that most fervent prayer. “And it came to pass as he prayed unto the Lord, there came a pillar of fire and dwelt upon a rock before him; and he saw and heard much; and because of the things which he saw and heard he did quake and tremble exceedingly.” Because of his focused, sincere prayer, Lehi was given a vision of such magnitude that the fire which symbolized it … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Tidbits – July 21, 2007

Lindsay Surrenders Can it be that Lindsay Lohan is really turning over a new leaf? She just left a six-week stint in rehab and has now turned herself into police to face driving under the influence and misdemeanor hit and run charges she received on Memorial Day weekend. It was this incident the prompted her to go to rehab. The 21-year-old actress’ blood alcohol level was above the legal limit. At the time, she was still underage. She is scheduled to appear in court August 24. Singer Mark Collie Charged with DUI Technically, I guess this is juicy Nashville tidbits, … Continue reading
