The very first Father’s Day was celebrated in the United States on July 5, 1908. Grandparents’ Day

Grandparents’ Day is this weekend. I have some memories of this holiday, largely associated with my elementary school years. I remember that each year, the school would have a special lunch on Grandparents’ Day and we could each invite our grandparents to attend. Before the lunch, there were musical performances by each classroom and before Grandparents’ Day we would make special cards or pictures during art class to present to our grandparents. I remember that one or both of my grandmothers would attend the celebration each year. I am sure that much has changed since I was in elementary school. … Continue reading

Embellishing Your Dad’s Day Scrapbook

My daughter zeroed in on the package of grill-themed scrapbook stickers like a heat-seeking missile during our trip to the mall yesterday. Ordinarily, I would have passed on the non-sale item, but since all the men in our family love them some BBQ, I decided to splurge on the 3D adhesives, so we could add it to the Father’s Day scrapbook we’re just about done crafting. In addition to the slew of photos and various embellishments, including stickers, stamps and die cuts, we need to insert a few quotes and inspirational poems to round out the album. If you are … Continue reading

A Single Mom Looks at Father’s Day

In all honesty, I have some ambivalence about Father’s Day. While I definitely still remind my kids that it is coming up, they are old enough now that I have stepped out of the loop when it comes to being overly assertive in trying to help them do something for their dad. In fact, I pretty much leave it up to them other than mentioning that the day is impending. There are some great fathers out there. I have heard tales and I know there are plenty of people on this site who are constantly commenting about having the most … Continue reading

National Dog Day: Got $5 Bucks?

I’d heard of Take Your Dog to Work Day but I had not heard of National Dog Day. I came across it on one of the lists I check periodically to find pet and/or animal celebration days to write about. Well, the reason I had never heard about it before is because it’s relatively new. If I lived in California, specifically near Malibu, I might have heard about it sooner. National Dog Day events are taking over Calamigos Ranch in Malibu today with activities like Most Beautiful Male and Female, a “Little Dog” Model Search for dogs 25 pounds and … Continue reading
