Do You See Your Marriage as a Commitment or a Contract?

This past weekend I attended a two day seminar at my church. It was a program called “Marriage on the Rock.” No, not marriage on the “rocks”…on the ROCK, as in strength and long-lasting. It was a great time of learning more about each other and ending it with a chance to renew your marriage vows. Since we just celebrated 20 years in September, it was quite fitting. One of the lessons that really stuck out to me was the whole idea of commitment. Too often instead of looking at marriage as a commitment, people tend to see it as … Continue reading

Research into Yoga’s Health Benefits

As a growing number of doctors are embracing the health benefits of yoga, studies continue to show the benefits of a regular yoga practice. Two recent studies looked at health benefits of yoga previously discussed in this blog: back pain and depression and showed further evidence that yoga is more than just exercise. Both studies were conducted by the National Institute of Health. In the first study, researchers looked at people with symptoms of depression. The study found that when people took a regular yoga class, the symptoms were reduced by about 45 percent. In the second study, researchers investigated … Continue reading

The Benefits of Making Shared Decisions

Making decisions together can lead to a happy Marriage. Studies have shown that making decisions alone can negatively impact a marriage. The person who is making the decisions is unhappy because they feel the entire weight of the responsibility. And the person who has no hand in the decision making may feel resentful or be left in a position of accepting something that they don’t want or don’t agree with. When making a mutual decision, both partners should be willing to be objective enough to look at the factors that will create the best overall outcome for the marriage and … Continue reading

The Benefits of Commitment

If you are married then you must be committed to your spouse, right? actually, this is not necessarily the case. Many couples find themselves having difficulty truly committing, even after the marriage ceremony. Taking two lives and blending them together without losing individuality can be difficult. Perhaps this is why many marriages fail within the first two years. Making a commitment to someone means closing the door on other competing possibilities. In other words, no more fishing in the sea for another partner. While this can be a joy, many people also find it very scary. In our society, we … Continue reading

Marriage with Benefits

Have you heard the expression “friends with benefits?” In case you haven’t, it means that you have a friend you can be sexually intimate with without the other strings attached. (i.e. No commitment issues like boyfriend/girlfriend titles or exclusivity claims. You hook up at will and go your separate ways afterwards.) Attitudes Towards Marriage Why is it that so many people see marriage as negative? As a trap or something that will stifle them as an individual? On some level I realize the general attitude towards marriage is one of sacrifice. You’re going to have to give up a part … Continue reading

Pushing for Publicly-Funded Preschool

If you missed President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address five months ago, you may be wondering why his recent trip to Illinois attracted so many leaders in the world of early education. Obama spent much of his trip to Fort Knox College on Wednesday reiterating the importance of his proposal to give American children a publicly-funded preschool education. The president unveiled his goal of providing quality early education for 4 year olds in his State of the Union address earlier this year and he is not backing down on his commitment. “If you think education is expensive, wait … Continue reading

Crazy for Cards

I remember when I got my first set of business cards.  I was elected as a member of the Hawaii State Board of Education and scored a box of fancy schmancy cards featuring a border of gold foil. I was 17 years old, though the cards made me feel at least 27. Since then, I’ve subsequently obtained more than a dozen other business cards from the myriad of companies which I’ve been gainfully employed. Whether you are a Fortune 500 CEO or running a small home business, having an official card to hand out to present and future clients is vital. … Continue reading

In Search of Cheap Seats

A few weeks ago, Southwest Airlines added yet another fee to its ever-expanding list of ala carte charges.  Now, you’ll have to fork over $40 at the gate if you want to board the plane with the first group of passengers. The discount carrier doesn’t offer assigned seats like United and American Airlines, but will bump you to the coveted group “A” boarding if you cough up the extra cash.  The offer begins 45 minutes before the flight departs, though is only available if the slots are not filled by elite and business select passengers who pay upfront for the … Continue reading

Do Debt Consolidation Loans Work?

Consolidation loans, or consolidation of debt may work for you in your goals to get out of debt. Consolidation has some benefits, but it also have some risks as well.
