Grey’s Anatomy – Season 3 (2007)

Grey’s Anatomy is a super smash of a hit that is known more for the scandals backstage involving Isaiah Washington and T.R. Knight than the storylines from Season 3. This may be due to the fact that a show that delivered measurable doses of hope, angst, humor and tragedy needed a stomach pump to clear some of the bad medicine delivered in Season 3. Tragedies Abound The season opened with the aftermath of Denny Duquette’s death. Katherine Heigl played Izzy’s grief well and it was a journey to see her begin to put back the shattered pieces of her life … Continue reading

Celebrity Inspirations – Maintaining a Healthy Marriage

We’re always reading about the latest celebrity split and marveling that some of those relationships last even five minutes in the glaring stage lights of celebrity and paparazzi. So it should come to no surprise that some celebrities take very special steps to preserve their marriages and to keep their relationships steady and strong. Making headlines recently in this very area is Patrick Dempsey. You may remember him from the movie Mobsters with Christian Slater or know him from the part that has launched him to super stardom as Dr. McDreamy on the very popular Grey’s Anatomy. The actor regularly … Continue reading

Anatomy of a Homestudy

An adoption process usually begins with a homestudy. This does not mean, however, that social workers will drop in unannounced and give your home the white glove test. The social worker is required to visit your home at some point to verify its basic safety. He or she will usually want to see the room where it is planned the child will sleep, but you will not be expected to have it prepared yet. A homestudy includes interviews with both parents (if applicable), both separately and together. A centerpiece of a homestudy is the adoptive parents’ “autobiography”. This is each … Continue reading

One Celeb Finds Love, One Ends a Marriage, and Another Takes a Pill

Marilu Henner Marries College Crush Marilu Henner of “Taxi” fame has married her college crush. She and new hubby Michael Brown had been dating for three years before taking the plunge last week. Henner has been divorced twice, but says she never had a second thought about giving marriage another try. She refers to Brown, whom she met in college in the early 70s, as her soul mate. The two reconnected in 2003, but shortly thereafter Brown was diagnosed with cancer. He proposed from his hospital bed that November and Henner said “Yes.” The couple spent the Christmas holidays in … Continue reading

Revisiting Celebrity Marriages – Lessons We Can Learn

The last time I visited on this topic was last April but with the rash of celebrity news over the last ten days, now is as good a time as any to take a look at the Hollywood power couples where it appears the marriages are failing or ending with the woman’s successful career continuing to skyrocket and the man’s appearing to be at best, underachieving compared to the wife’s. In the last few weeks we’ve seen Britney Spears leaving Kevin Federline, Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Philippe filing for divorce, Whitney Houston finally saying good-bye to Bobby Brown and before … Continue reading

Anatomy Of A Celebrity Divorce

Let’s face it, in Hollywood, stars are used to doing things their way. So, it should come as no surprise to hear some of the “unusual” ways celebrities deal with the demise of their marriages. For example, according to PEOPLE magazine Shanna Moakler, former “Meet The Barkers” star and “Dancing with the Stars” contestant made the best of her split from Travis Barker with a recent divorce party at the Las Vegas nightclub Light at the Bellagio. A divorce party? Sound strange? Not to Moakler who told the magazine she had been to a few of her friend’s prior to … Continue reading

The Marriage Week in Review – October 7 – 13

Another week down in the month of October and just two weeks to go until we arrive in November and the beauty of planning a Holiday Wedding or celebrating an anniversary in what for many people is one of the warmest emotional times of the year. Personally, I can’t wait for Christmas music, but in the meanwhile, we still have Halloween and time change to get through. Be sure to note on your calendars that October 29th is the day time changes and we’ll be rolling the clocks back an hour. Another great benefit to the crisp fall air in … Continue reading

The Anatomy of a Marriage

For viewers of Grey’s Anatomy who are not up to date on the current storylines, I’ll give you fair warning now, this blog contains some spoilers. For viewers who’ve watched Grey’s Anatomy over the last couple of years, one of the ongoing storylines was the romantic tangle between the doctors Derek and Addison Shepherd and Meredith Grey. Originally, Meredith and Derek hooked up in the first season. Addison Shepherd, Derek’s wife appeared in the season finale. Meredith was understandably devastated to learn she’d fallen in love with a married man. According to Derek though, his marriage was over – but … Continue reading

Obama Cut Funding for Abstinence-Only Sex Ed

President Obama has eliminated all government funding for abstinence-only sex education programs in public schools. Research shows that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs are ineffective and that they negatively impact young people’s health. Abstinence-only sex ed programs, and abstinence-until-marriage programs, are an extremely limited version of sexual education. These types of programs emphasize that young people should not have sexual intercourse until after they are married. Abstinence based sexual education programs rarely include information about anatomy, puberty, sexual health, and sexual orientation. These programs are favored by some Christian religious groups and by Republican lawmakers. Research shows that abstinence-only sexual education programs are … Continue reading
