Talking to Teens about Marriage

Teens tend to fall in and out of love quickly sometimes, which often leaves parents a little skeptical of the intense feelings proclaimed over the latest love interest. However, it is important to pay attention to what they say, and to gauge how serious they really are.

The scariest part is that some kids will do nearly anything to try to tie themselves to the object of their affection. Young girls, despite contrary opinion, do sometimes get pregnant on purpose believing that it will seal the deal. Some boys encourage it. Other teens will run away to get married or take other impulsive actions, so we as parents must have these discussions with our kids.

While they don't always seem to be listening or paying attention, they do hear us. Teens need to know that we take their feelings seriously. It helps to try to put yourself in their shoes. Come on, it wasn't that long ago that we were teens ourselves. Remember those tortured feelings? Remember feeling absolutely desperate to see that boy or girl that had stolen your heart?

Even if you are worried about how serious your son or daughter is becoming, it's better to retain at least some control over the situation. The best advice I can give is to show empathy, listen, and try to keep your teen acting on emotion based impulses.

Speaking frankly is important but listening is imperative as well. Just don't avoid these conversations, no matter how uncomfortable they might be.

It helps to take your teen aside privately. Maybe even leave the house and go have lunch together. Also, don't discount their feelings. As much as you might believe your child is only experiencing infatuation, your teens feelings are very real to him or her. Help your child understand that marriage is a lifelong commitment and that he or she still has a whole lifetime ahead.
