“The Baby Borrowers” Shows How Children Affect Marriages

As I wrote about in another article discussing reality TV shows, I’m nuts for a lot of them. Another show I’ve been watching with some interest this summer is “The Baby Borrowers”. “It’s not just television, it’s birth control.” I may not have that tagline exactly correct, but it’s close. A quick synopsis in case you haven’t been watching: five sets of teenagers who are ready to become parents have agreed to become guinea pigs. Every three days they’re given a new batch of kids to “parent.” It started out with babies, went to toddlers, then pre-teens, then teens, and … Continue reading

More about the ACF Healthy Marriage Initiative

My previous article began discussing the ACF Healthy Marriage Initiative in detail. The article listed the mission of the initiative and the reason why the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 was created. This article will continue giving details of the act and initiative. There are several goals that go along with this government program. Some of the goals are listed below. Have more children raised in two parent homes where the parents are in a healthy marriage. Help couples that plan to get married have the skills for a successful and healthy marriage. Help teens and young adults obtain the … Continue reading

Obama Cut Funding for Abstinence-Only Sex Ed

President Obama has eliminated all government funding for abstinence-only sex education programs in public schools. Research shows that abstinence-only-until-marriage programs are ineffective and that they negatively impact young people’s health. Abstinence-only sex ed programs, and abstinence-until-marriage programs, are an extremely limited version of sexual education. These types of programs emphasize that young people should not have sexual intercourse until after they are married. Abstinence based sexual education programs rarely include information about anatomy, puberty, sexual health, and sexual orientation. These programs are favored by some Christian religious groups and by Republican lawmakers. Research shows that abstinence-only sexual education programs are … Continue reading

Taylor Swift the Prude

What does it say about our society when a celebrity is getting bashed for apparently not “putting out” often enough?  Teen heartthrob Harry Styles from One Direction has had enough of Taylor Swift’s prudish ways and is moving on. Yet a current events television show was making fun of her.  Personally, I would like to applaud her.  But I would go even further and give her a standing ovation if she could say that she was saving herself for marriage. I know…that is so old-fashioned, right?  Virginity is outdated, right? Actually, the concept of virginity seems to only be okay … Continue reading

Does Your Spouse Get Your Time?

One of the things couples fail to realize is that many marriage problems stem from a lack of time. You see, it takes quality time to nurture a relationship. If you are spending more time at your job or with your kids, then your marriage is bound to suffer. Now don’t get me wrong, different seasons in life require more attention than others. For instance, when my children were young they naturally required more of my time and attention. But even then, it didn’t necessarily mean my husband only deserved the leftovers. Time can’t always be measured in quantity. It … Continue reading

Morality in America

Do you really want to know what you are dealing with, when it comes to raising children today? Have you considered the morality of America…where we came from, where we are at and where we are heading? A Gallup poll was recently conducted on “Values & Beliefs” in America. The findings will help you better understand just what you are up against when it comes to the raising of your children. This isn’t meant as a way to make judgments but simply to enlighten parents. And hopefully with this enlightenment, there will be conversations with your children about what you … Continue reading

Those Silent Moments

Last week when the temperatures here in Wisconsin hit record highs, my husband and I enjoyed taking a walk nearly every evening. One of our evening walks was filled with conversation. We were dealing with a situation with one of our teens and had to talk it out. The talking helped to get out some of the frustrations we were feeling and it also helped in coming up with some decisions on how we were going to handle things. Then the next night we took another walk but this time it was silent. We walked for a mile not saying … Continue reading

I Hate My Teenage Daughter

No, I don’t hate my teenage daughter. But I’m sure the title of this blog captured your attention. This is actually the title of a new show coming to FOX, starting November 30th. I happened to see a preview of it this week. In the preview you see two mothers sitting together, talking about their teenage daughters. But all you hear is negativity. Granted, it’s supposed to be a comedy but I actually found the dialog a bit unnerving. Once again the world of sitcom is tackling an important relationship in such a way that it doesn’t promote any sort … Continue reading

Is Justin Bieber Off the Market?

Sorry young girls and ladies, but it looks like Justin Bieber is in love. Apparently the relationship between him and Selena Gomez is becoming quite serious…he may end up being completely off the market soon. Justin Bieber recently shared that there is more to Selena than just her “hotness.” One of the things he mentioned was her strong family values. But apparently they recently shared a hotel room together in Brazil. Hmmm…not sure how this ties in with strong family values but maybe I am thinking in a whole different ballpark. Keep in mind that Justin is only 17 years … Continue reading

Are Dating Sites A Good Place To Find True Love?

By the time I got divorced, my oldest daughter was in her late teens and my youngest was 10. Although I wasn’t ready to run to the altar any time soon, I did find that I wanted to date, and perhaps find my true “Mr. Right.” Flying solo on yet another Valentin’s Day wasn’t something I looked forward to. Not wanting to leave things in the hands of fate, I signed up on a few respected online dating sites. I didn’t go crazy with the dating thing, and I always tried to be very careful about who I talked to. … Continue reading
