Staying Safe in the Winter

Winter brings its own set of hazards to our families. For example, did you know that sledding accidents will injure 20,000 kids this year? This is only the number that are serious enough to be reported through a hospital or visit to the doctor’s office. Short of putting our kids in bubble suits or making them stay indoors all day, what can we do to make sure that our kids stay safe in the winter? Here are some winter safety tips. Make Sure Kids Have the Right Stuff Before your child heads out the door in the winter, make sure … Continue reading

He Loves Me Anyway

It’s been a hard last six months. Okay, it’s been a hard last two years. We’ve had ups and downs – lots of downs – and mostly centered around me and my health (and my frustration about my health). You know what’s amazing to me? My husband loves me anyway. He knows that I can’t be defined by all this stuff that’s happened. He knows that’s not really me. And he knows that if he’s patient, I will return to who I once was. That’s one of the biggest secrets in marriage, I think. We need to look past our … Continue reading

Staying Active While Watching Television

I have a confession to make…I LOVE watching television. Not everyone will readily admit to such a thing, but I will. I love watching docudramas. I love watching shows that educate you about particular issues of interest. I love shows where dreams come true (“American Idol,” “X Factor,” “America’s Got Talent”). I love “Cake Boss” and Fox News. But I also love to curl up on the couch with a blanket and snuggle in for a good movie. Maybe you are a TV lover as well. It can easily become a good excuse to keep your bum on the couch … Continue reading

Staying on Track

In a previous blog I shared details of my latest scrapbook project. I am working with a bunch of moms from my daughter’s school to craft a Polar Express memory book filled with shots and mementos documenting the students’ winter/train/holiday-themed adventures. Since I have never attempted to create a scrapbook with a train theme, I took to the Internet and various craft stores to research our options. Frankly, I am shocked by the sheer magnitude of embellishments, paper and layout ideas there are for scrappers looking to design their own railroad-inspired albums. Scrappers with train-obsessed children have no shortage of … Continue reading

Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow

It’s funny how much things change from generation to generation. My grandparents were married for over fifty years when my grandmother died. For their generation staying married was what they did, no one looked anywhere else, they took what they had and made the best of it. My grandparents adored each other but that’s not to say they didn’t drive each other crazy sometimes too, but they stuck it out, through the good and the bad. When I was growing up my family was the odd one out. My father died when I was three so I had a step … Continue reading

The Spy Who Loves Me

This past week I attended a parenting class at my church. We are actually watching a video series that incorporates discussion time. I can’t recall the exact wording of the question but we were asked something that had to do with discovering things about our children. I had whispered to my husband, “I spy.” He smiled and told me I should share that with the class. I hesitated for several moments. I wasn’t sure what other parents think about spying on their children. It’s not something you really talk about. I didn’t want to come across as being a nosey … Continue reading

The Top Five Reasons Why I Love to Exercise During Pregnancy

As hard as it is to get starting on a regular exercise routine, maintaining it can be even harder. We all know that there are a million reasons why we cannot seem to find the time or motivation to exercise, but we cannot deny the benefits of regular exercise. While we tend to focus on the negative aspects of exercise (overcoming obstacles, finding the time and motivation, etc.), there are even more positive reasons to start a workout regimen. Upon my own personal reflection of the last few years of my own exercise routine, I realized that I have gained … Continue reading

Staying On Task

I love having a clean house, it is relaxing to me, mind and body. Unfortunately it is so much work to get it done that I used to frequently give up. My housecleaning method sounded like a really bad version of “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie.” This is how it typically went for me: I’m off to a good start, excited about having a clean house. I’m dusting the front room and I pull Hailey’s shoes out from under the coffee table. I set the dust cloth on the table and head downstairs to put the shoes away. … Continue reading

Staying Motivated While Using an Elliptical Machine

I started using an elliptical machine when I was a teenager. Now I am on my second machine and I still love it. Elliptical machines are a great addition for your at-home gym. They can seem a bit pricey but they last 5-10 years. The best thing is that it is great for days when you don’t want to workout outside. My elliptical has a built-in fan that is especially useful for hot days. Here are some ideas to keep you motivated while working out on your elliptical machine. This can be applied to other indoor cardio machines as well. … Continue reading

Fallen Out of Love?

Sometimes I see and hear people talking about their marriages and a couple of main themes crop up time and time again. One is that of one person in the couple feeling they have fallen out of love with their partner. If we expect all of our married life to be like the heady first flush when we first fell in love, then we are going to be in for a shock. Love is more than just an emotion. It is more than just a feeling. Love involves action. Loving is about doing. If we care for someone, we show … Continue reading
