Seven Days of Valentines

Instead of celebrating just once for Valentine’s Day, why not build up to it for a week? Start on the seventh (or have cards or other small gifts begin arriving on that date) and present something each day until the fourteenth. Small gestures are best, because they will surprise and delight the person you love without making that person feel obligated to return the favor. You don’t want him or her to feel bad, thinking that he or she should have had something each day for you too, so keep it sweet and simple. One cute idea is to pick … Continue reading

Enjoy the Quiet Now

In the midst of all the preparations for having your first child, I think something many of us moms overlook is making sure we take advantage of the time we have left being a childless couple. It’s hard to imagine how your life will change once you become parents. Beyond the shift in priorities and the budget to accommodate our little ones, there are other changes to consider. Hormones and fatigue can drastically change how we spend our free time. Instead of spending quality time together we often end up choosing to sleep instead. Sometimes housework takes up more time, … Continue reading

Late Winter Travel Deals

Late January through mid-March is typically a slow time in the travel industry. Consequently, penny-pinching travelers can expect to find great deals on airfare and hotel rooms during this later winter time frame. This year is no exception. Take a look at some of the super savings being offered right now: CARIBBEAN Set sail for sunny locales while saving serious dough. Holland America is offering outstanding savings on a round-trip voyage from Fort Lauderdale with stops in Grand Turk (Turks and Caicos), San Juan (Puerto Rico), Philipsburg (St. Maarten), and Half Moon Cay (Bahamas). Valentine’s Day: Special Delivery

What will you do for your sweetie(s) for Valentine’s Day? Will you have something special delivered to work or school to say ‘be mine’? A lot of thought (not to mention cash) goes into picking out just the right things and having them delivered. I like thoughtful ideas rather than extravagant. I won’t be spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars. I won’t be sending six foot tall Teddy Bears, dozens of roses, or 10 pound heart shaped boxes of chocolate to school for my kids. I’ll just find a little something that’s cute and sweet that says Happy Valentine’s Day … Continue reading

World Marriage Day

Did you know that today is World Marriage Day? I felt so dramatically unprepared for the arrival of this day when I read it in my news alerts a little while ago. Now I admit, I’ve been feeling pretty rotten today. Because I haven’t felt good at all, I’ve not done much in the way of work or even scanning my news stories. So what is World Marriage Day? That’s a really good question! World Marriage Day In 1981, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, couples encourages the Mayor, the Governor and even the local Bishop to proclaim February 14 as a … Continue reading

Writing Great Love Letters

With the “Letters of Love” section that Heather began, I decided it would be fun to ask people what they think is the basis of a great love letter. I asked people I know what they believe are great features of letters they have received, as well as the best features of love letters they’ve written. I’ve combined the answers with my own thoughts, below: Be Yourself and Don’t Try Too Hard I received this response (or similar variations thereof) the most and I happen to agree. Don’t try too hard to make love letters sound like Hallmark cards, just … Continue reading

How Do I Love Thee? Start Counting the Ways!

I wish I had thought of this sooner, but we still have time until Valentine’s Day. You can start now or wait until Wednesday, to make it one week of counting the ways you love your spouse. We have mentioned before that it’s important to tell your mate that you love him or her often, but it’s also important to tell the one you love why you feel that way. Doing so is a great way to show appreciation, and it’s also very romantic. You can simply start writing reasons on the calendar, speaking them aloud, or finding other creative … Continue reading
