Religious Groups Still Fighting Birth Control Mandate

A new federal rule requires health insurers to provide birth control, for free, to their policyholders. This is because birth control is considered to be preventative care. Employers who offer employer sponsored health insurance cannot opt out of this mandate. Some religious groups are upset about this. In August of 2011, a new health reform law was passed. This law included birth control into the category of preventative care. A previous law required insurers to cover all preventative health services at no cost to the policyholder. Essentially, this means that health insurance policies must offer all forms of prescription contraception … Continue reading

‘Tis the Season for Fighting

While Hallmark and Kay Jewelers commercials may try and lead us to believe this is a season of receiving romantic gifts and creating peaceful memories, anyone involved in a real-life relationship knows this can be a season for anything but blissful moments. The holidays add stress. There are extra errands to run, gifts to buy, parties to attend, and schedules to shuffle. Yes, amidst the chaos there are happy times or else no one would sign up for the seasonal celebrations year after year, but there’s also the potential for plenty of chaos and short fuses –and I don’t just … Continue reading

Rules of Fighting

In some previous articles, we have discussed how all couples fight. There will be disagreements in every kind of relationship. No matter if the two are family members, a couple, or coworkers, they are sure to have differences that arise on occasion. The success in a relationship is all about how these differences and arguments are handled. Many couple or marriage therapists will actually agree that arguments are healthy for a relationship when carried out in the right way. It is when partners bottle things up and do not speak out that tension can grow. There are some rules that … Continue reading

Take Advantage When Rules Matter

I have made no secret about the fact that my life is now filled with teenagers and teenagers are not particularly interested in following rules, regulations, or any one else’s expectations. In fact, one of the main jobs of the teenager is to rebel, question, and experiment in order to find his or her own way in the world. BUT, for younger children that is not necessarily the case. There is a wonderful window of time in the early elementary years, when many children are fascinated and consumed by rules and regulations. For parents, this can be a time to … Continue reading

The Facebook Motherhood Challenge

A Motherhood Challenge was going around Facebook in early February of 2016. It is entirely possible that it is still making the rounds (as these types of challenges tend to do). What may have been originally intended as a simple way to honor motherhood has run into a lot of controversy. The Facebook Motherhood Challenge had simple rules. A mom was to post five photos that represent their journey as a mother. The idea was to focus on the moments that brought joy. Next, the mom must tag five other mothers, who must do the challenge, too. On the positive … Continue reading

Are You Tired of Playing Referee?

Do you look good in stripes? Most women shun wearing clothing covered with unattractive lines, yet when they have kids it seems they are forced to don the referee uniform more than they would like. After a while, though, some refuse the task and leave it up to their warring offspring to solve their own disputes. How often do you allow your children to resolve their own clashes? Moreover, how often does the technique work? Personally, I am not opposed to having children resolve issues amongst themselves. However, I think you are kidding yourself if you think young children possess … Continue reading

Silence is Golden

“It’s easier to hear noise than silence.” Wise words from a mom who is enjoying the end of summer, or more importantly, the end of the constant bickering between her seven-year-old son and his 10-year-old sister. The new school year started in my neck of the woods this week and I’ve spent the last few days swapping summer war stories with other parents at morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Moms with multiple kids were busy doing their happy dance, celebrating a temporary reprieve from the sibling squabbling they’ve refereed all summer. As a mom of a singleton I am better … Continue reading
