From Potential Disaster to Triumph

I have so been enjoying my new slow cooker. What an improvement on the last one. Since we were getting it with reward points we went for an up market model and one in which you could brown meat in the same pot before turning it onto slow cook. It is a Morphy Richards stainless steel and looks very sleek, rather like I a flying saucer. It’s been getting a lot of use. Even so things don’t always work out as planned. We were going to a birthday party on Sunday afternoon and I was to take the crock pot … Continue reading

Recipe for Disaster

Wet paws and a tile floor created a recipe for disaster. I landed with a massive crash. My eye blurred. My head started to swim. I couldn’t make up my min if I was going to faint or be sick or both. In the end I did neither. Mick helped me up and into a chair. From that point on he was wonderful as he got me dressed and to the hospital. All the time we were both praying it wasn’t going to be as bad as it looked. After all it’s only last year I broke my wrist on … Continue reading

Jobs in Disaster Relief

As much of the world has done, I have watched in horror the utter destruction of parts of China which has overshadowed the tragedy in Myanmar by its press coverage. I have a close friend in China right now. She is safe, but was near the quake and has shared briefly that there is utter destruction and hopelessness all around. She is a trained EMT and can help, but as a foreigner is powerless to do so unless invited. In honor of her, and the recent tragedies that have occurred in Asia these last two weeks I’ve decided to write … Continue reading

Should You Create A Birth Plan?

Should you create a birth plan?  It can be a helpful tool for making your wishes known both to your healthcare provider and the labor & delivery staff, but it also seems a little silly to plan something like one’s labor: after all, if we could control it, we would all have easy births. When I first heard about birth plans, I decided that they weren’t for me.  I’m a very Type A person; I get stressed if even my silliest of plans get messed up, if they’re ones I’m excited about.  Trying to plan my baby’s birth, and everything … Continue reading

Protecting Your Household Inventory

We have had several big fires here lately in Utah. A combination of no rain and many, many people living closely together in the desert is a recipe for disaster. Because we live in such a dry climate, homes go up quickly. Recently two were lost when a tree fell on a power line and sparked a fire. The responders said the homes went up so quickly that if anyone had been at home they might not have gotten out. Then there have been several out of control wild fires that have burned homes and cabins. Many people were evacuated … Continue reading

Discipline After Divorce

As a parent, even when I was married, I struggled with how to discipline Hailey. I wanted to make sure that we used these times as teachable moments, not just punishment. For the most part, I think we succeeded when her father and I were parenting her together. When you are married discipline seems a little easier, there is another person there to look at the situation and offer input. When you are single, disciplining your child becomes harder but even more important. Sometimes I was afraid of overreacting. Usually my days were long and my patience short and many … Continue reading

The Dreaded Super Market Run

Chocolate. Lots of chocolate. That’s how you survive grocery shopping with five kids under the age of seven. Trust me; I am living proof that chocolate and a very short list will keep you from filling out paperwork for the local loony bin. As if wrangling a cart full of kids is not bad enough when you are trying to gather ingredients for dinner, add in long lines, rude store employees and high food prices, and you have the recipe for disaster. Or at least a solid promise that you will never again attempt to grocery shop with your offspring. … Continue reading
