Re-Evaluating Your Cold Weather Fashion

The only upside of having to endure this week’s brutally bitter, inhumane winter temperatures (we’re talking 30 below wind chills, folks) is that families can score cheap food from McDonald’s. Thanks to Ronald’s “Cold Days, Hot Deals” promotion, parents can save some cash by purchasing one Big Mac at the regular price and getting the second for the price of the previous day’s noon temperature. For example, if the mercury only gets up to 3 degrees today, then tomorrow, the price of a second Big Mac will be a mere 3 cents. What’s more, if the mercury doesn’t climb above … Continue reading

Your Business Is Always Evolving

One of the things that all home-based professionals must contend with is the fact that starting a business is not a one time event. Once you have done all of the hard work to get your business up and running and you have developed systems of getting your work done, you can not simply switch over to autopilot mode. Running a successful home based business involves a constant background process of assessing and reassessing things as you go along and adjusting the way that you do business as needed. That said, it is important that you keep your key goals … Continue reading

Who, What, Where and Why

I talk a lot about setting goals when it comes to fitness, in both your diet and your exercise. But sometimes we set goals and we don’t really think about why we have those goals. The “who, what, where and why” are important when it comes to goal setting. For instance, let’s say you decided at the beginning of the year that you want to lose 50 pounds. “Who” do you want to lose it for? This is really important because when it’s for someone other than yourself you are not likely to succeed. It has to come from deep … Continue reading

Listening to Your Body (and Interpreting the Message)

Two out of the last three days, I was attacked by a ninja. A ninja nap. It snuck up on me after my usual post-work routine: walk the dogs, feed the dogs, feed myself. I found my limbs sluggish and my eyes heavy, so I gave into the ninja nap. Three hours later, I woke up. (Both times.) Maybe it’s just me, but sometimes a nap catches me off-guard. I’ve got things planned, work to do… but I find myself sinking down into sleep instead. It can throw off my whole schedule for the rest of the day, but sometimes … Continue reading

What Are Adaptogens?

I was at a holistic health expo this weekend and visited a booth offering “adaptogen sprays”. I’d never heard of adaptogens before, and grabbed a brochure. Adaptogens are plants and/or herbs that supposedly have the ability to increase the body’s resistance to fatigue and stress. Although certain adaptogens have been in use since ancient times (many were and still are popular in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine), modern investigation into adaptogens did not begin until the 1940s. In 1947, an adaptogen was defined as an agent that helps the body counter physical, chemical, and/or biological stress. Adaptogens help boost the … Continue reading

Greatest American Dog: The Final Episode

Somehow, despite my problem, I made it through the entire series of the Greatest American Dog. (Except for the couple of episodes I missed while on vacation, as I mentioned in my last Greatest American Dog commentary.) A Dog is An Extension of The Owner When they were trying to narrow it down from the final three to the final two, the judges were evaluating the owner as much as the dog. They were pretty critical of how the owners were with their dogs. As Laurie put it, it came down to a battle of the training methods. (Which again … Continue reading

Is it Successful or Lucrative, or Both?

Evaluation is a key component to running a successful business, no matter how small it might be. It is also the one component that many of us overlook. After all, we are often so busy trying to keep the money rolling in and meet the needs of the day, who has time to sit around and contemplate what is and what is not working? That contemplation, however, that figuring out whether we are actually being successful and making money, is important. Success can mean different things to different people. In fact, I would even go so far as to share … Continue reading

Coping with Unusual Requests

Occasionally, there are going to be those clients, customers, colleagues, or vendors who ask us for something special. They may be asking for special treatment—or it just may be that circumstances have influenced their request. For a small home business, we can either be in a good, flexible position to adjust to unusual requests, or it might ask more of us than we are in a position to give… For many small businesses, how we cope with and handle special requests can be the cornerstone of our reputations. For others of us, it happens so seldom that it might really … Continue reading

Take Time to Figure Out What You Really Want & Need

To read what I have written about single parents and dating, you would think I am a curmudgeon and down on the whole scene. I really am not at all, I am just a bit seasoned from years of living and single parenthood. One of the things I do believe about single parents and dating is that a person can really take advantage of the status of “single hood” to figure out what he or she really wants or needs in a partner, and in their life as a whole. We don’t need to be in a big rush to … Continue reading

Evaluating Time Spent on Proposals

If your home business requires you to search out new business via pitches and proposals, it can be a bit confusing trying to figure out the “value” of the time you spend working on those proposals. Since this is time (and materials) spent that are not directly compensated, it can take away from time you could be spending on other paying clients or customers. But, again, those proposals are necessary in order to get NEW clients and customers who will eventually be paying. How do we evaluate how much time and effort we should spend on proposals and do what … Continue reading
