Playing the Supporting Role

Recently a young woman I know did several things that impressed me in her marriage, so I thought I’d share them with you. Just because someone hasn’t been married very long, doesn’t say all of us can’t pick up tips from the way their marriage works. The first thing was she supports her husband in the work he is doing. He had to give an important talk to a large number of people. Even though she had a heap of things needing to be done over the next few days, she decided this was more important as it was happening … Continue reading

Actors that Turned Down Iconic Roles – Part Three

Okay, I promise I will stop after this one! I just find it fascinating to think of certain actors in certain roles: John Cusack as John Bender in The Breakfast Club? No doubt that Judd Nelson was perfect in this role, but how would John Cusack have faired? It certainly didn’t hurt his career to miss this role. Judd Nelson on the other hand… Bruce Willis as Sam Wheat in Ghost? Yep, apparently this one was given to Bruce Willis to read first, but he thought playing a ghost would be bad for his career. Wait, didn’t he play a … Continue reading

Someone To Be Proud Of

Sometimes I tell my husband I’m proud of him. I do it when he’s accomplished something really cool, like finishing grad school or laying down hardwood floor in our house. Other times I tell him when I feel that warm ache in my chest when looking at him. He’s a great person, the best in my opinion, and I am so proud of him. It feels a little strange to say sometimes, because it’s not the sort of thing we’re used to saying to our spouses. We expect to hear it from our parents, or tell it to our kids: … Continue reading

Home is Where the Heart is

This afternoon, I had the opportunity to do a book signing at our local Barnes and Noble bookstore. There were piles of authors there and I was having a great time visiting with them and with the customers, but then I saw my husband and kids walk in, and my heart just melted. What a good-looking family I have. How blessed I am to be so supported in the things I do and to come home to these incredible people. There are times when I’m not quite so grateful. I’ll confess to being utterly frustrated, downright perturbed, and through-the-roof stressed … Continue reading

Television lost another legend this week. Actor Peter Falk, best known as television’s “Columbo,” died today at age 83. Requirements for a Good Spouse

We all have ideas about what makes a good spouse. I’m sure if we compared notes some of them would be the same. Here are mine. You might want to add some others in the comments. It needs to be someone who you love and who loves you. Love is to my mind a requisite for marriage. I couldn’t imagine getting married for any other reason. It should be someone who is not only your lover but your friend -your best friend. In other words someone you can talk to and share with and you know they will be accepting … Continue reading

Are You Walking Hand in Hand in Your Marriage?

Yes, I mean the physical act of being hand in hand when walking together, but also the idea of as the 1950s song says traveling ‘Side by Side.’ By that I mean, are you working together at your marriage? Are you working as a team? It makes a huge difference to the way we cope with the pressures of life, when we can share the load and when responsibilities aren’t left to one person. To me that’s one of the secrets to a successful marriage, traveling ‘the road, sharing our load, side by side.’ No matter what happens and tragedies … Continue reading

Star Updates: Jennifer Hudson Offers $100 Grand to Find Nephew and Amy Poehler Gives Birth

Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson wants to find her missing 7-year-old nephew now. The singer turned actress is hoping a $100,000 reward for his safe return will encourage someone with information on his whereabouts to come forward. According to police, the former “American Idol” contestant put up the reward money early Sunday along with a posting on her MySpace blog pleading with fans to help in the search for her beloved young nephew Julian King. The boy has been missing since Friday, the day his 57-year-old grandmother, Darnell Donerson and his 29-year-old uncle, Jason Hudson (Hudson’s mother and brother), were found … Continue reading

Hit Me Baby One More Time

They’re baaaack! Two of Hollywood’s biggest stars are returning to the big screen in roles that gave their egos–and their banks accounts–big lifts. First up, Tom Cruise. Suri’s daddy is planning to flex his muscles again in a fourth Mission: Impossible flick. Several news sources have confirmed that Cruise is heading back to Paramount to make the sequel. In doing so the movie star has presumably made amends with studio mogul, Sumner Redstone, the Hollywood movie bigwig who dropped Cruise’s production company from Paramount a couple years back. The nasty split made headlines and prompted Cruise to revamp the United … Continue reading

Richard Widmark Dead at 93

It was announced today that actor Richard Widmark died in his home Monday after a long illness. In the statement issued by his wife Susan Blanchard, she said, “it was a big shock, but he was 93.” Widmark started his show biz career in radio drama and theater before moving to the big screen. And when he moved, boy, did he move. His film debut was as the cold hearted killer Tommy Udo, who pushed an old lady in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs to her death in 1947’s Kiss of Death.. For that role, Widmark received an … Continue reading
