Finding Your Identity in Your Marriage

I never thought much about my life growing up. At times in my adult life when I’ve considered getting married, having kids, I didn’t have anything but my own thoughts at that time to rely on. It’s strange because I’m an obsessive planner for short-term details, but I can’t think of any point in my life when I’ve had a vision for the future. As a kid I always had dreams of what I wanted to be when I grew up: veterinarian, zoologist, reporter for National Geographic Magazine, but those were always just fleeting childhood whimsies. I never pictured myself … Continue reading

The Confusion Surrounding Gluten-Allergies

There are a lot of people who don’t have a good understanding about gluten allergies, celiac disease, or the differences between them. Some people think that a person chooses to eat a gluten-free diet for no other reason than to lose weight. Here is a quick explanation of the confusion that surrounds gluten-allergies. Celiac disease affects about 1% of the population. It is a genetic condition that causes a person’s body to be unable to tolerate, or properly digest, gluten. It actually causes damage to that person’s intestines. The inability to absorb food can lead to other health problems, like … Continue reading

Study Shows Milk in Baked Foods Helps With Allergy

A study shows that children who have an allergy to milk can outgrow their allergy if they are exposed to increasing amounts of milk that has been baked into food. This is important for parents of children who have this food allergy to be aware of, so they can start the process of milk exposure early. There was a study done by researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. They looked at 88 children who had been diagnosed as having a milk allergy. The children were between the ages of 2 and 17. The researchers evaluated each … Continue reading

When Your Child Realizes She is Different

I dread the day when Maggie realizes she is different. I bet it will be here faster than I can plan for too. One day she’ll ask me why her cousins or her friends don’t have to do the treatments that she does or clean their hands as often as she does. Over the last few months, I have wondered what I’ll say to her when this day comes. Children with special needs spend their early years believing that everyone endures what they do. Blind children may believe that everyone sees with their hands, while children with cystic fibrosis, like … Continue reading

October 2010 General Conference-Courageous Parenting

I have to admit that the idea of being a parent to teenagers terrifies me. Now, let me say, there are definitely things about it that are enticing too. But, for the most part, I’m terrified! Hopefully the years between now and then will provide me with added wisdom and knowledge to help my kids become well-rounded, decent people. I loved the talk in General Conference titled “Courageous Parenting” by Elder Larry R. Lawrence of the Seventy. While I am still a few years away from dealing with some of these issues, it gives me hope to know that we … Continue reading

Is Birth Control Sabotaging Your Fitness Goals?

If you are using oral birth control, it may be, without you even realizing it. A new study found that oral contraceptive use impairs muscle gains in young women, and is associated with lower hormone levels. That’s a shocking find, especially for active young women, who are looking to improve their fitness performance while taking oral birth control. Researchers at Texas A&M University and the University of Pittsburgh studied 73 healthy women between the ages of 18-31 for 10 weeks. During the study the women were broken up into two groups and completed whole-body resistance exercise training. The first group … Continue reading

Music and Lyrics (2007)

“Music and Lyrics” stars Hugh Grant as Alex Fletcher, formerly of the pop band accurately named “Pop!” The band was a cross between Wham and Tears for Fears, and was wildly popular in the eighties. But Alex’s partner left for greener pastures, leaving Alex to wonder if all his glory days were in the past. His career starts to take a turn for the better when his manager (Brad Garrett) tells him that teen sensation Cora wants to meet him. She’s a big fan of his and wants him to write her new song. It must contain the line, “finding … Continue reading

Does Research Validate Our Hopes?

My last blog shared, and sometimes critiqued, some negative psychological research on adoptees. This blog will focus on research showing positive outcomes for adoptees. As I said in my last blog, this is not a comprehensive expert research review—just a parent sharing some things to mull over. A 1964 study performed developmental appraisals on fifty adopted children between ages three and seven. All of the children had learned about their adoption before the researchers met them, and none of the children were being seen in counseling or reported to have problems. Their I.Q.s were higher than expected. There was no … Continue reading
