Being Intentional about My Home-Based Business

Many of us are looking for new changes as the year 2012 draws near. I was given a word for this upcoming year and it is “intentional.” This word can be applied to a variety of areas in my life, with one of them being my home-based business. I want to be intentional about my organization. My desk could use some of that. It is time to get rid of those things that are just taking up space. It is time to make my work space more functional. I want to be intentional about my priorities. I need to make … Continue reading

The Dangers of Being Good

I’m wary of good kids. I used to be good. I was a great student who was a good citizen and polite in class. I was quiet, most of the time. Now? Now, perhaps I’m a bit of a renegade upon occasion. I’m still a good citizen, but sometimes I’m opinionated. I wiggle in class. I cast doubts upon generally accepted truths. I also make a point of making sure that kids of all sorts get an opportunity to be themselves. Yes, they need to learn how to behave well in social settings as an adult, but this doesn’t necessarily … Continue reading

Being Flexible

I don’t handle surprises well. So when my ex husband lost his job last month I started feeling a little crazy. You would think now that we’re divorced these things wouldn’t affect me quite as much, but I think the opposite is true. This meant child support was cut in half, which was a huge hit for me since money was already tight. It also meant that our son’s visitation schedule was a little more up in the air. My ex was able to go back to an old job working at a local restaurant, which meant working nights and … Continue reading

Why Bother Being a Homemaker?

When I’ve muttered about going back to work full time, they’ve been very vague mutterings. Recently my husband said that he thought it was a spectacularly bad idea. I tend to agree. Homemaking is a lost art. I live in a place where the cost of living is very high. It’s not as high as a few places in the world, but it’s high enough to make it quite difficult to get by on one income, depending on what that income might be. The truth is, I work part time at a day job and part time on contracts, making … Continue reading

Should You Offer Flexible Payment Options?

If you own your own home-based business, you are responsible for every detail of how your business is run. While this can be overwhelming at times, at other times is it wonderfully empowering – especially when you find ways to differentiate yourself from your competitors by doing things a little bit differently. In today’s economy, consumers are very conscious of all things money-related. As a business owner, you can win major points with your customers by structuring your payment options in a budget-friendly way. I’m certainly not suggesting that you let your customers walk all over you when it comes … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: August 2008

Isn’t it crazy the way babies grow so quickly? It seems that you just get used to one stage and boom they are already into another. Tonight, were busy getting the household all set for my eldest child’s first day of second grade. My two younger ones are excited and want to start school, too. It will be a busy month. Don’t worry about the missing last week of blogs. I’ve gotten quite a few questions about where I have been. The Baby Blog tends to go on hiatus the last week of the month. That may change in the … Continue reading

A Single Parent On the Job—Part Two—Flexible Work Hours

In part one of this little series on single parents on the job, I wrote about how important it is for a working single parent (and that is most of us!) to have a work environment that is family and single parent friendly. Additionally, while I know plenty of single parents who work in restrictive, traditional-type jobs, I do believe that jobs where the work hours can be more flexible make for less harried parents and are more conducive to the single parent family. By flexible hours, I don’t necessarily mean that we need to be able to come and … Continue reading

Working: Finding Flexible Jobs

Finding flexible jobs as a single parent isn’t easy, but it is getting easier and easier as time goes on. More and more companies are starting to see the benefits of being flexible, the benefits of allowing employees to work from home, the benefits of keeping their employees happy and allowing them to have more time out of the office. I know people kept saying that, and I kept thinking “Yeah right, then why can’t I find any of these flexible positions?” They are out there however. Sometimes it just takes a little more digging than normal, sometimes it takes … Continue reading
