Daddy is Home

After years of toiling in the late evenings and sometimes even into the next day, daddy is finally home at a family friendly “normal” time and the kids could not be happier. My husband worked very strange hours over the past several years and it would be an understatement to say it had a somewhat undesirable effect on our family. Because he worked so long and so late, breakfast became the most important meal of the day (which it is anyway by virtue of its necessity) because it was often the only meal we shared. Because he worked so long … Continue reading

My Son’s Birthday Party Part I

Summertime is a very busy birthday season for our family. My husband, son, and I all have summer birthdays. We also have six other extended family members (siblings and parents) that have summer birthdays. Combine the birthdays with the other summertime celebrations (like the Fourth of July) and we get a summer full of parties! We recently celebrated our son’s third birthday. We had a very nice and intimate party with just our family (mommy, daddy, birthday boy, and baby sister) on the morning of our son’s birthday. Daddy had to leave for work mid morning, so I planned a … Continue reading

Daddy’s Birthday Part V

Now that we had everything prepared for daddy’s birthday, we invited daddy back upstairs (did I mention that the cake and soup was a surprise) to take a break from working on his dissertation. He smelled the French Onion Soup simmering and was immediately excited for his birthday dinner. I was not exactly sure what the soup was supposed to look like and taste like, but my husband told me that French Onion soup tastes and looks like the soup I had made (I personally think it is kind of weird because it is basically just stringy onions in broth). … Continue reading

Daddy’s Birthday Part IV

After the cake finally baked and was cooling, I turned my attention towards making the frosting. The whole time my son is following me around pulling chairs up to the counter to help stir and help taste. We had a minor crisis when my son wanted to taste the baked cake; he found a butter knife and dug it into one of the layers putting a hole all the way through. I was a little perturbed at my son’s need to take matters into his own hands but after a short nursing break with my daughter, we got back to … Continue reading

Daddy’s Birthday Part I

Yesterday we celebrated my husband’s thirtieth birthday. The children and I had a wonderful day planned for daddy; one that required lots of preparation. His gifts this year are going to be entirely homemade. Mostly because his gifts were some of his favorite foods but also because we recently put a price limit on gifts and food gets the most bang for the buck (my husband really enjoys certain kinds of food that I never make). Two days before my husband birthday, our son and I made some beef stock using some beef bones that I had purchased from a … Continue reading

My Daughter’s Day Without Her Dad

Planning a wedding is so much fun and so much stress. Other than your own wedding there is no wedding you look forward to more than your daughter’s. You want everything to be perfect. Too bad things don’t always work that way. When I got divorced my ex husband and I struggled to figure out what our relationship should be. After a while we came to the conclusion that we wanted to be the best parents we could be to Hailey. Recently my ex husband has decided that Hailey no longer needs him and he doesn’t need to be a … Continue reading

What Happened to Daddy’s Little Girl

One of the hardest things as a single parent is helping your child maintain a relationship with their other parent. It’s even harder when that parent is not doing their part. I worked hard to make sure Hailey had a relationship with her father. I feel like I did more than my fair share, I would drop her off and pick her up on his weekends. He said since I was the one who wanted the divorce then if I wanted him to have Hailey for the weekend I could do the driving, so I did. I invited him to … Continue reading

Daddy’s Girl No More

I always try to be positive about my ex husband, after all, he is Hailey’s father and she is a mix of the two of us so if I say bad things about him, I’m saying bad things about half of who she is. I worked really hard to make sure they had a relationship even going so far as to take her to his house and sit outside in the car reading a book so she could visit with him. I wanted Hailey to have her father in her life. Apparently that was more important to me than it … Continue reading

The Monster in My Bed

This little monster doesn’t hide out under my bed, he crawls in it every night causing his mother lots of sleepless nights instead. When my ex husband and I first got divorced our son had a lot of changes all at once. Mommy and Daddy didn’t live together anymore, we moved in with Grandma and Grandpa, he moved from the crib into a big boy bed, and instead of having his own room he got stuck with Mommy. So when he insisted on sleeping in my bed at first I didn’t mind too much. He was going through a rough … Continue reading

Spending Time With My Sister Part II

On day two of our visit we awoke fairly early (probably due to the time difference) and I, of course, was starving. I had brought a cooler full of food with us, particularly breakfast food items for my daily three egg omelet. It was not apparent yet that my sister and her husband were awake yet so I prepared breakfast for my son and I during which our hosts awoke with their baby daughter! While my son and I ate our breakfast, the baby also had her breakfast and my sister’s husband made breakfast for the two of them. The … Continue reading
