My Favorite Halloween Couple Costumes: Period Costumesby Courtney Mroch | More from this Blogger 07 Oct 2007 09:43 AM Is it just me, or is there something incredibly romantic about costumes from bygone eras? From medieval gowns to antebellum garb, I'm completely enchanted with the prospect of dressing in the clothes our ancestors once wore. Halloween is a wonderful time of year. It serves as an excuse to indulge the dress-up fantasy. (Face it, just because we get older doesn't mean the urge to pretend we're someone else like we once did as children vanishes.) But I know not everyone shares my enthusiasm about this. Wayne will dress up, but he prefers funny costumes to fancier ones. (Which he considers period costumes.) Ah well, just as I have my fantasy about donning complimentary sexy costumes, I also have a fantasy that one of these years I will convince Wayne we should go as one of the following: • Renaissance Nobleman and Renaissance Lady: I think Wayne would look so handsome in this kind of getup! • Karneval King and Karneval Queen: Maybe I've watched the Phantom of the Opera (2005 movie version) one too many times. I love the masquerade scene. In these getups, we'd be ready for the ball! • Aristocratic Gent and his Lady: I can keep dreaming about these. They'd set us back almost $200 for the set. But they sure are elegant... • Colonial Woman and Colonial Man or Patriot Man: I'd probably be more inclined to push the Patriot Man costume on him. Goes back to the man in uniform thing. • Southern Belle and Confederate Officer: Wayne would probably rather be a Union Officer, but it seems it'd be more historically accurate to have a Southern Belle courted by a Confederate Officer. • Gunslinger and Can Can Girl: It's the duster I like about the Gunslinger costume. Screams manly. And it'd only make sense for someone with that much testosterone to be seen with someone equally sassy, like a Can Can Girl. Oh la la! • Gangster and Flapper: The Gangster costume I picked isn't too unreasonable price-wise, but I really am dreaming if I think we'd ever pay $300 for the deluxe Flapper costume I found. (But it is so pretty. On the wish list if we ever hit a jackpot.) • Car Hop Girl and Greaser: I know, I know. Sandy's supposed to go with the greaser, but for 50s costumes the Car Hop Girl one appeals to me most. Most of these cost an arm and a leg (I've noted some of the prices), but I figure since I'm already dreaming I might as well dream about "the" costumes I'd like to see us in.
