Busy Time Management

I’m addicted to technology and time-management news! (Phew!) There, I’ve said it. I love the tips, tricks, tools, and discussions offered on a variety of websites. This past month I’ve been fairly free to spend a good deal of time clicking around on these pages for fun in between my spurts of writing for a playwriting course and reading for an Art class I’ll be starting next week. But it’s finally caught up with me. Today I’ll have to actually start attending class physically. Some classes don’t require this (creative writing) and so I’ve been able to churn out material … Continue reading

Marriages That Stand the Test of Time

Given the emphasis on divorce recently on the marriage blog, I thought I’d share a few examples of marriages that have stood the test of time. Our local paper this week had an item about Marjorie and Frank Thompson, who this week celebrated 64 years of marriage. The pair met initially at their church’s youth group where romance blossomed. Although they lived for years in Berry, they now reside at Osborne house. Osborne House is a hostel and nursing home that our choir attends regular attends. After 64 years Marjoie and Frank can still say they ‘are very happy,’ which … Continue reading

Why Do Long-Term Marriages Split?

Recently Heather began a discussion about outgrowing our spouses. In one of her latest articles she discussed how we can outgrow friendships and in the same manner may also outgrow our mate as time passes by. Ironically I have been thinking along the same line of similar terms. However, my mind has been rather focused on long term marriages that end. What is it after twenty years of marriage that would make someone want to give up and leave? After spending much of their efforts and time together, do these couples really want to throw in the towel now? Long … Continue reading

The Marriage Blog Week in Review October 28-November 3rd

Last Week’s New Jersey Supreme Court ruling played a major ripple effect on our articles for this week and even as we got ready for Halloween and recovered from it, the November elections and vote loomed ahead. Several states will make their decisions on new marriage laws, politicians and more. If that were not enough for you, we have the holidays looming ahead of us and that can have a dramatic impact on our marriages and our family lives. So without further ado, here is our Marriage Blog week in review: Saturday, October 28 In Marriage in the News: I … Continue reading

More Short Hollywood Marriages

The last blog was of unbelievably short marriages – some only lasting hours and days. But here are a few more that lasted a little longer. Actress Courtney Thorne-Smith married scientist Andrew Conrad in June of 2000. It was embarrassing to In Style Weddings magazine when Thorne-Smith graced the cover in a beautiful wedding dress, only a week after announcing the dissolve of her seven-month marriage. Everyone was surprised when Pretty Woman Julie Roberts married country crooner Lyle Lovett. An unlikely pair, their marriage lasted a little less than two years, although there are rumors that the no-so-happy couple really … Continue reading

Men and Women Are from Earth

A study came out recently in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: “Men and Women Are from Earth: Examining the Latent Structure of Gender.” The central hypothesis of the paper is that men and women actually aren’t all that different.  Many of the differences that we might demonstrate have more to do societal expectations than inherent biology. This isn’t the first study on the subject.  I recently read the book “Delusions of Gender: How Our Minds, Society, and Neurosexism Create Difference,” by neuroscience psychologist Cordelia Fine.  In it she exposes noticeable trends in male vs. female psychology, both in … Continue reading

Being a Healthy Example to Young People

You know what I fear that society is teaching our young people today? That marriage just doesn’t work. Statistics have shown that marriages are on the decline. More and more people are choosing to live together. Now my point isn’t to say whether or not living together is right. What I want to focus on is the negative portrayal that marriages have been given. All you have to do is flip on the television and you are bound to come across a sitcom where marriage is poorly portrayed. You don’t see very many “happy” marriages displayed across our television screens … Continue reading

Screen Actors Guild Awards

The 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards ceremony was held tonight. The SAG President Ken Howard talked about the hopes of merging of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Ernest Borgnine. Borgnine has 200 titles listed on his Internet Movie Database page, including such iconic films as The Wild Bunch, From Here to Eternity, and The Dirty Dozen. He also won an Oscar in 1956 for his performance in Marty. As for television, “Boardwalk Empire” won for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a … Continue reading

The Makings of a Good Marriage

What are the makings of a good marriage? Well there are several things that are important but a couple of them really stand out to me. One is perseverance. Perseverance is something sorely lacking in many marriages today. Think about what perseverance really means. According to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary it means to make a continual effort or to achieve something despite there being obstacles in the way such as opposition, failures or difficulties. Isn’t that what every marriage faces? At one point or another we may find ourselves in a season of trouble and tribulation. But when we can persevere, or … Continue reading

Weathering the Seasons of Marriage

We go through different seasons in our marriages. Some of them are pretty enjoyable, like the carefree days of summer or the excitement of new things in the spring. But then we also go through seasons where it gets a little more challenging. Here in Wisconsin fall can sometimes feel more like winter and then the snowstorms come and well, it’s kind of bleak and barren. Those are the most difficult times in a marriage. I really, really dislike the unpleasant seasons of marriage. They seem so long; once again I have to compare it to the winters we experience … Continue reading
