Estate Planning and the Step Family

For too many of us, estate planning is the thing we’re always going to get to but often don’t. It’s like flossing, but with exponentially greater potential for harm. I understand why we procrastinate, believe me I do, but a failure to act in this department can have a devastating effect on your family. Our financial planner had been after us to create an estate plan for a year; as we began preparations for an extended trip through Mexico, it seemed irresponsible not to have something in place. We contacted an attorney who came highly recommended, and blithely scheduled an … Continue reading

Planning a Wedding- Part 3

Part 3 of wedding planning is here Wedding Dress If you are getting it made you will need to have it organized early. Some dressmakers and companies will tell you 7 months are not long enough so a lot depends on how long the engagement is. Or you might decide to buy one ready made. I did this when I married. I saw a dress I loved that was a bit different. I tried it on. It needed only minor alterations. It wasn’t expensive. I lay-byed it – the first dress I tried on. A friend hired her wedding dress. … Continue reading

Wedding Dresses: Buyer Beware

Several months ago one of the local news stations here in Nashville ran a story about a bride-to-be who couldn’t return her wedding dress when her fiance died before their wedding day. (I think this was back around the time my mom got diagnosed with a month to live and went into the hospice. Which is why I didn’t write about it sooner. I’m just now working my way down the list of ideas I had back then.) I don’t remember exactly how her fiance died. (I want to say car accident, but that might not be right.) How he … Continue reading

How Much?

Would you pay $9000 for a wedding dress? To me that is an exorbitant for a dress for one day. Yet that is not considered all that expensive by some people. I guess it depends on what is important to you. $9000 was the price a friend’s daughter found the one she wanted for recently. It was too expensive for her. She could think of many other uses for that money. In the end she had her dress made overseas, an almost exact replica for under $500. When people talked about watching the royal wedding, which I didn’t watch, the … Continue reading

Oh Sure NOW They’re Getting Married

Breaking news (not): Nicole Richie and her live-in lover Joel Madden are reportedly planning their wedding now that she’s pregnant with their second child. First comes love, then come marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage… obviously this children’s rhyme was penned by someone, who had absolutely no ties to Hollywood, or the 21st century. Baby first, marriage maybe second, or third (depending on how important career is). Hey, that’s how they roll in Tinseltown… and Toledo… and Tulsa… and just about every other place in the world. But, that’s life, right? Just ask first time parents Richie … Continue reading
