My Unconventional Valentine’s History

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but as you might be able to guess, Jon and I don’t really do anything for Valentine’s Day. The holiday does mean one thing: candy hearts. The weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day are the only time of the year I can find them. Their close companion Necco Wafers just aren’t the same. So I suppose one might say Jon gets me a Valentine’s Day present, because he usually buys me candy hearts. However, even this practice has two exceptions that probably exclude it as a Valentine’s celebration. First: Jon usually brings home … Continue reading

Looking for Romance in The Wrong Places

Sometimes we can look for romance in all the wrong places. Like this story of women who looked for romance in the toilet. This is not a joke, although it does have a humorous side to it. This story, told me by a writer friend, is about a woman he used to know who had a free lending library in her toilet. Now before you get the wrong idea here. The space was there but the toilet had not been installed. Her husband, a long distance truck driver, had a habit of never finishing jobs he started. In their ‘unpainted … Continue reading

My Favorite Halloween Couple Costumes: Classic Characters Costumes

If you’ve been following my favorite Halloween couple costumes series, you’ve seen my picks for funniest, sexiest, and period costumes. Well, I’m not through yet. I can’t leave out the classics –the characters everyone recognizes from TV shows and movies. Not since I was very little, like seven, have I dressed up as a favorite TV character. (Wonder Woman was the preferred choice several years in a row as I recall.) But it might be fun one of these years to see if Wayne would like to couple up as one of the following: • Fred and Wilma Flintstone: Wayne’s … Continue reading

Places I’ve Spotted the Funniest Halloween Couple Costumes

Cat in the Hat Wayne and Saloon Girl Courtie Earlier this month Karri posted some really great suggestions for couple costumes. (I loved the Baker and Bun in the Oven one…I thought that was so cute!) It caught my attention because every year I scour through catalogs and Internet sites looking for couple costume ideas. Wayne and I always dress up, but we’ve never dressed up to compliment one another. He’s always his own unique thing separate from whatever I choose. (Mainly because Wayne’s a prankster and gravitates towards comical costumes, whereas I go the adventurous route –pirates, saloon girls, … Continue reading

What Are Romantic Ideas?

Romantic ideas sell more magazines, books and movies than sex. It should be telling that most people can figure out the latter, but the former should be offered at college level as a required course. The final wouldn’t even have to be a test, because life will offer enough pop quizzes on romance to fill an entire issue of just about any woman’s magazine. When men and women come together in relationships, they are often looking for partners that share common interests, common goals and with whom they wouldn’t mind seeing at 5 a.m. with no sleep and hair that … Continue reading

1997-2007 – The Gate Closes

This is a bit of an off the cuff blog, but last night on the Sci Fi channel, they aired the last first run episode of Stargate SG-1. The show premiered in September of 1997 and was a follow up to a 1994 film. I have some nostalgia related to Stargate SG-1 because it premiered the first year my husband and I lived together. We weren’t huge television watchers, but we’d been big fans of the movie when it came out. We set aside some time the night it aired and watched the two-hour premiere. We had no idea then, … Continue reading

Father’s Day, Date Nights & Other Fun Events

What a great weekend we had here at home. My apologies for not writing a focused on Father’s Day article today as I intended. But starting late yesterday, my husband and I both shut down our computers and headed off to spend the next 24 hours focused on the family as a part of Father’s Day. Sometimes you need to make a conscious decision to shut off the responsibilities and the rest of the world and just be together as a family. Date Night Our daughter’s gymnastics school hosts a parent’s night out once a month. It’s a four-hour event … Continue reading

What To Know Before You Ask Someone Out for a Date

A good rule of thumb, if you ask someone out on a date, know where you want to go or what you want to do before you ask them. There are several reasons for this, of course, but the best reason is that people are indecisive. They are never quite sure what they want to do, but will often agree to do something if it sounds like fun. So for the average person who wants to go out on a date, the first issue you should acknowledge is that money is likely to be involved. Whether it’s just paying for … Continue reading

Marriage Tips: An Rx For Laughter

The best marriage tip I ever received was about laughter. I always thought it sounded trite, but after our decade together – I can honestly say that what gets us through the worst of times and what buoys us in the best of times is the fact that we can laugh together. My husband is funny because it tickles him to make me laugh and I have to say – that when I can get him grinning like an idiot, it’s more than a bit of a thrill for me. So if you’re looking for a way to make your … Continue reading

Rules of Romance

It’s hardly surprising in a world where uncertainty seems to be becoming the watch word whether worried about the military action in Iraq, Afghanistan and other hot spots or facing economic hardships at home – adding a little excitement and spice in our marriages is more important than ever. So it’s important to recognize what the rules of romance are so that you and your spouse can make the best of your marriage together. Rules of Romance The first rule of romance is an easy one – or at least it should be. The first rule of romance is to … Continue reading
