The Culture of Marriage

So often when we look from the outside in at other couple’s marriage, we can see certain elements that are not always apparent to the couple involved in the marriage. What we are seeing is the way that marriage operates or its culture. In a lot of buinesses and sporting teams they talk about the culture of the business or of the club. In his book Transforming Company Culture, David Drennan descrivbes culture is ‘what is typical of an organisation, the habits, the prevailing attitudes, the grown-up pattern of accepted and expected behavior.’ Surely, this is equally true of a … Continue reading

Marriage in the News: Labor Pains and Football Games

Let me start by saying, wow! I was blown away when I heard this on the news last night while watching highlights of the Bear’s game, and I looked up the story today for more details. It’s about a school teacher named Colleen Pavelka, and she’s become the model of the perfect wife for many husbands who are ardent football fans. Colleen Pavelka decided to have the birth of her baby induced Friday so her husband Mark could attend the Chicago Bear’s Playoff game against the New Orleans Saints. Sure, it was a big game, leading the Bears to the … Continue reading

Is Your Spouse into Sports?

Is your husband (or maybe your wife) all wrapped up in the NFL Playoffs? This is an exciting time of year for football fans. This Sunday, we’ll learn which teams will head to the Super Bowl (hopefully, the Chicago Bears will be one of them!). Of course, then your spouse will have to see who wins the Super Bowl in couple of weeks too. Will you watch the game(s) with him, do your own thing, or will you sigh and think, “I can’t wait until football season is over”? If you’re not into football, you probably don’t see what the … Continue reading

Marriage is a “Team” Sport

You’ve likely read my title and are thinking that I’m going to talk about how husbands and wives have to work together. How both partners need to give 100% to the relationship. How like a team you combine efforts, forging through the difficult times towards a common goal. Nope. . .sorry. While I could honestly say all that–that’s not what I’m going to talk about. Instead, I’m going to tell you about my husband and his second passion: fantasy football. In case you are wondering, I am his first passion. Well, unless it’s Monday night and then I’m more at … Continue reading

Marriage Partners Can Equal Fitness Partners

I write for the marriage blog as well as the fitness blog and the following could actually be placed in either blog. I elected for here in fitness because we talk about parents motivating their kids and working on improving their kids’ fitness all the time. It’s equally important to work on maximizing your spouse’s fitness because in turn, they can help you maximize yours. Marriage is: A contractually committed partnership, including sexual love, cohabitation, shared economy/property and mutual childrearing; socially approved and legally acknowledged emotional, sexual, and economic relationship between two or more individuals The definition of marriage that … Continue reading

Married at Sea: Disney Cruise Weddings

I’ve never written much about a Disney wedding, which is strange because I’m a blogger both for our Disney and our Marriage categories. But if you read my marriage blogs you know that I’m not a fan of big, fancy weddings, and a Disney wedding would certainly be that. Previous Disney bloggers have written a lot on the topic, so I didn’t have anything new to offer. Until now. I just learned that the Disney Cruise line offers wedding and vow renewal packages. I’m always up for writing about a new Disney thing I didn’t know existed, and we’ve never … Continue reading

Supporting Your Spouse

Long before I met my husband, I was a huge baseball fan…of the Milwaukee Brewers that is. I knew all the players and the positions they played. When I eventually met and married my husband, something changed. I suddenly lost interest in baseball and would sometimes find myself complaining about the fact that all he did was watch sports. Then a few years ago he decided to coach one of our church’s softball teams. That first season I was one of the fans but the following season I became the “stat girl.” When my husband first asked me to do … Continue reading

Embracing the “Other Woman”

Over the course of my almost 20 years of marriage, I have come a long way in some areas. While there are of course many areas that still need work, there is one particular place that I have been victorious over and would like to encourage other women about. It is sometimes a joke in movies and television shows…the wife complains about her husband’s interests in sports. Whether it’s a sport he plays in or watches on TV, she finds herself feeling like she is competing for his attention. She can’t understand the obsession with a club, or men running … Continue reading
