Marriage is a Lot Like Pizza

Marriage is a lot like pizza. It needs firstly a good solid and well rounded base to put the toppings on. Marriages need to be on a solid base of commitment and love and well rounded with time together and time apart, of conversation and of silence.

Then the base needs to be spread with tomato paste or tomatoes. A marriage needs a good spread of love. The next thing Mick and I put on when making pizza is oregano and chili to spice it up. All marriages need to be spiced up at times.

Then the toppings go on. The toppings may vary according to individual taste. Once we had a married friend tell us how great chicken pizza was. Mick and I dutifully tried it, after this guy raved and raved about it. We decided it was the most disgusting thing and that chicken and pizza should never go in the one sentence let alone on in the same dish. So toppings may vary according to individual taste. Marriages will vary too. What works for one couple might not work for their friends or neighbors.

Mick always insists pizzas are the complete meal. By his reckoning you get all the food groups: bread, meat, diary in the cheese, vegetable in the capsicum or mushroom or zucchini or whatever vegetables you choose. Marriage can make some people feel complete.

Cheese goes on top and in a way holds it all together. In a marriage you need understanding, love, and what Mick termed 'giveability' which translated means the ability to give and take.

Pizza is satisfying. A good marriage is also satisfying.

Pizzas need to go in the oven to cook. Some marriages you find it is during those hard times when things are stressful and your life is under heat and duress, that you really come to value having the support of your spouse as you go through the experience together. Over the years Mick and I have had our share of these times but it only served to make love and commitment to each other stronger.

Someone commented recently that a lot of marriage discussion was heavy so I thought I'd take this lighthearted look at how marriage is a lot like pizza. Lastly, pizzas are meant to be enjoyed. So is marriage. Would you agree? Related blogs
