Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward: A Lesson in Long Marriages Hollywood-Style

I didn’t think I was going to have anything to write about Paul Newman’s death here in the Marriage Blog. I figured that’d be something for the girls who cover the Popular Culture Blog to write about. But as I’ve come across all the different tributes to his life, something’s become glaringly clear: Paul Newman was more than an actor, a race car driver, a camp founder, an activist, and a food line entrepreneur. He was a loving, devoted husband, something he seemed to be just as proud of as he was of any of his other accomplishments. Maybe even … Continue reading

TV Wives as Role Models: My Faves from the 1950s-1970s

Since November is National Inspirational Role Model Month, I thought it’d be fun to list some television wives I’ve admired over the years. Even though they are TV wives, in a TV world where everything’s scripted and a happy ending is assured, there’s wisdom and inspiration to be gleaned from their foibles, mishaps, and messes nonetheless. Because conflict, confrontation, and duress are guaranteed at some point during the half hour or hour time slot in which their shows run. That’s what makes it entertaining: to see how they’ll deal with, and eventually overcome, the problems they’re faced with. I’ve listed … Continue reading

Marriage in the News: The Good & The Bad

When it comes down to news articles about marriage of late, you can hardly scan a new search without seeing dozens of articles focusing on the issue of gay marriage and the legal battles that continue to draw their lines in the sand from coast to coast, including the current challenges to the law in the only state that recognizes gay marriage. While this issue continues to vex and frustrate supporters on both sides of the issue. It doesn’t help the cause when gay couples, which have apparently fought long and hard for the right to be recognized as married, … Continue reading

Marriage Inspiration: 50 Years of Marriage +

On Friday, I went to Sam’s to do some shopping and there was a woman there with her husband. He was in a wheelchair and rolled along sedately with her while she was pushing the basket. They were chattering away about everything from the groceries they were looking at to their Halloween plans. The husband was insisting the wife should go with the grandkids and he would take care of the trick or treaters who came to the door. Moments in Time I was on the same aisle with them and I listened to their natural chatter that flowed back … Continue reading

TV Wives as Role Models: My Faves from the 1980s-Present Day

So far I listed my favorite TV role model wives from the 1950s to the 1970s. This list takes us through the eighties to current times. 1980s • Elyse Keaton (Family Ties): Her down to earth demeanor and strength of conviction helped her be the beacon her husband and kids turned to for guidance through rough waters. • Jennifer Hart (Hart to Hart): She was glamorous, stunning, stylish, and smart and she got to have all these amazing adventures catching bad guys with her dashing, devoted husband. • Roseanne Connor (Roseanne): This one straddles both the eighties and nineties since … Continue reading

The book follows the story of Liana Winn, adopted at age four, who has always felt like an outsider … Continue reading

Author Review – Dick Francis

Dick Francis is well known for his books, each of which feature horse racing in some way. Whether the main character is a jockey, a trainer, or the owner of a horse transport company, horses feature predominantly in these novels. The reason for this might not be as well known. Dick was a jockey himself for many years, winning over 350 races and was even the jockey to the Queen from 1953 to 1957. Born Richard Stanley Francis in Lawrenny, South Wales, he was the son of a jockey, so we could say that he himself was a thoroughbred. At … Continue reading
