A Violent End to a Marriage

When I read news stories like the one this morning it really makes me saddened about the state of our world and society. I was horrified to read the news story this morning of a husband who killed his 30 year old wife. Using his own gun Scott Hain killed his wife Melanie, while she was on a video call talking to a male friend. The husband later killed himself. The horrific incident raises lots of questions. What goes through the heads of some people and how far have selfish obsessions taken over that a man would kill his wife? … Continue reading

Despite experiencing good and bad times, and life’s ups and downs, Bill and Muriel McGee this week celebrated 60 years of married life. So to what do Bill and Muriel attribute their long and lasting marriage? 1. ‘You have to share.’ 2. ‘It’s all about give and take.’ 3. … Continue reading

Making a New Year’s Resolution for Marriage

This is a good time to reflect and take stock and make resolutions that will improve the quality of your marriage. I loved this recipe for beauty in Zaphon a writing newsletter I periodically receive. For attractive lips, speak words of kindness For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed and redeemed – never throw out anyone. As you grow older, you will discover that you … Continue reading

Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward: A Lesson in Long Marriages Hollywood-Style

I didn’t think I was going to have anything to write about Paul Newman’s death here in the Marriage Blog. I figured that’d be something for the girls who cover the Popular Culture Blog to write about. But as I’ve come across all the different tributes to his life, something’s become glaringly clear: Paul Newman was more than an actor, a race car driver, a camp founder, an activist, and a food line entrepreneur. He was a loving, devoted husband, something he seemed to be just as proud of as he was of any of his other accomplishments. Maybe even … Continue reading

Celebrity Tidbits—Tyra’s Bad Rap, Tom “Dungeon Master” Cruise, and More

TYRA’S BAD RAP It’s nice to know that stars are not infallible. Model-turned-talk-show-host Tyra Banks always looks flawless on television, but now the world knows that even a Victoria Secret cover girl can make mistakes. Banks appeared on ABC’s chatfest “The View” a couple of days ago to clear up a nasty rumor that she was “cheap.” Turns out, a New York newspaper recently reported that Banks and music mogul Russell Simmons had “dined and dashed” after chowing down on breakfast at a Big Apple restaurant. The truth of the matter (according to Banks) is that the two stars mistakenly … Continue reading

Update: My Ordeal & What the Doctor Said

First and foremost let me say thank you to everyone who has sent me a kind note, a thought or a prayer – it means more than I can say to all of you. Yesterday afternoon, I went to see a specialist about the mass the sonogram found on my ovary. Sitting in the waiting room for the doctor seemed like an eternity and though I have spent the weekend working diligently to not think about the doctor’s concerns over the weekend and though it remained a white elephant in the room – I was a nervous wreck waiting to … Continue reading

Only about 15 states recognize common law marriage and Texas is one of them. The laws in Texas require only that a couple consider themselves married, present themselves as a husband and wife or file a joint tax return as well as live together in the state of Texas – and they are considered husband and wife under the rules governing common law marriage. Challenging the Law The laws are being challenged by a mother in Oregon who wants her son’s remains to be returned to Oregon for burial. His common law wife wants him to be buried near her … Continue reading
