We’ve been exploring the marriage laws of the 50 states in the United States. We started in New England and worked our way down the Atlantic coast before heading west. Heather’s article, Marriage in the News: Covenant Marriages & Texas Legislation, described five pending bills in Texas related to marriage. Interestingly enough, they were proposed by Republicans and are being questioned and condemned by Democrats, which is the complete opposite of how such things usually work. Clearly, there is no doubt that I am conservative, but that doesn’t mean I agree with the so-called conservative party’s bid to expand intrusive government. I agree with Democrats on this. Marriage in the News: Covenant Marriages & Texas Legislation

This seems like some heavy subject material to bring up this morning, but this landed in my inbox and I couldn’t help but bring it up for discussion. Recently, I talked about the proposed marriage license legislation in Nebraska. The legislation proposes that for every couple who goes through 10 hours of marriage education then they would only need to pay $30 for a marriage license and if they don’t take the class, then they’ll need to pay $100 for their marriage license. Gay Marriage Debate gets Heated at Families.com

Wow. Where to begin… Perhaps I should start with the comment I intended to leave on Heather’s latest gay marriage article: I agree that the Indiana legislation is somewhat vague. Legislation is to be written in a way that allows a person of reasonable intelligence to understand its meaning. If reasonable people question what is allowed or denied, it can be declared unconstitutionally vague, and clearly, people are questioning the meaning of this particular measure. Massachusetts Governor Orders Record of Gay Marriages Yep, I’m sure I’ll light a few fires today, but here it goes – the Governor of Massachusetts, Deval Patrick has ordered the recording of 26 out of state gay couples who came to Massachusetts to get married. These marriages will not be recognized by their home states and that is part of the reason former Governor Mitt Romney blocked them. Did anybody else fall for Heather’s April Fool’s Day joke? I totally did. Then, when I saw the Nebraska story, I wasn’t sure if it was the real deal or not. I couldn’t find anything in my usual online news sources either, but I’m still going to offer my opinion. While I agree that the intentions behind the Nebraska bill sound good, and that couples would do well to examine their relationships more thoroughly before marrying and perhaps receive instruction, I am not one who tends to applaud government control. Apparently, being named the Sexiest Man Alive can be a curse at times. Actor Nick Nolte had that horrifying mug shot seen around the world, Patrick Swayze lost his life to pancreatic, and Mel Gibson, well, I don’t have enough room in this blog to go into all his woes. Love That Lasts

Sometimes you just see love in the faces and actions of other married couples. Yesterday was such a day for me. Our choir went to sing for the elderly residents in a local nursing home. I looked out a saw one couple. She was nestled close to him and they were holding hands as they listened to us sing. As we sang The Anniversary Waltz she started to quietly sing along, all the time looking at her husband.
