Changing My Name

By now I’m sure that you can tell that feminist issues are a very big deal for me. It even took a bit of coaxing from my parents for me to walk down the aisle with my dad; I did it for him, because it was important to him, but I don’t like the idea of being passed off from one man’s hands to another. Yet one thing about my decisions related to my married life really stands out: I took my husband’s name. I’ll admit it rankled a little, just the idea that I erase a part of myself … Continue reading

In the News: California Assembly Offers Equal Opportunity

You may remember a few months ago I talked about a whole new kind of marriage debate. The debate began because a man wanted to take his wife’s last name after they married and there were no laws allowing for this possibility. Well this has all changed now that the California Assembly passed legislation ending what may be perceived as marriage bias. The Name Equality Act The Name Equality Act also known as AB 102 was passed by a 45 to 20 vote. Democrat Fiona Ma from San Francisco with cosponsors that included three California affiliates of the American Civil … Continue reading

Marriage in the News: Seriously?

Every once in a while, I read a news story that leaves my mouth hanging open. I’ve focused the last several days on romance, letters of love, love notes and even love letters. Challenging the Law The laws are being challenged by a mother in Oregon who wants her son’s remains to be returned to Oregon for burial. His common law wife wants him to be buried near her … Continue reading

Marriage in the News: A Whole New Kind of Marriage Debate

The following news story caught my eye and I have to say with all the articles headlining in the news over the rights of same-sex couples to get married (and I’ve more than expressed my opinion in this area so I won’t bore you here), this particular marriage debate definitely refreshed my interest. In this case, it’s an unconventional argument in a more traditional situation. When A Man Wants to Take His Wife’s Name In our society and in most of Western Society, it’s traditional for the wife to take her husband’s last name when he marries. I did it. … Continue reading
