Easter Traditions and Marriage

It is a tradition of our marriage not to eat meat on Good Friday. We traditionally have salmon patties for lunch or dinner on Good Friday. So does our daughter and her husband. At our current church we have hot cross buns after the service. The same thing used to happen in another church we belonged to in Sydney. I don’t, since I’m gluten free. No-one seems to have a produced gluten free hot cross buns. I can’t be bothered making them just for me. One year Mick and I attended a church in the rural area where we lived. … Continue reading

Celebrity Marriage Woes

After Mariah and Ashley’s big, fairytale weddings, there are more celebrities divorcing. It seems to be a never-ending cycle! Ally Sheedy Actress Ally Sheedy, who was a member of the Brat Pack in the Eighties, has separated from her husband, actor David Lansbury. If his last name sounds familiar, it is because he is the nephew of veteran actress Angela Lansbury. Ally and David married on October 10, 1992. Their daughter Rebecca was born two years later. While the couple has confirmed the split, it seems to be amicable. Ally’s parents divorced when she was young and she spent half … Continue reading

The Biggest Challenges to Marriage

You may think I’ll bring up the marriage debates, but in my opinion it’s not related to the greatest challenges facing a successful marriage and successful interactions between the couples that are married. The challenges I want to talk about here are the challenges that can leave your relationship precarious and potentially lead to the dissolution of your marriage if you and your spouse aren’t equipped to handle the challenges. I like to call these challenges the final five, because when you and your spouse are capable of overcoming these challenges, then you are usually in a stronger place in … Continue reading

Marriage Stress Busters: Don’t Let Stress Tear You Apart

When you and your spouse are under a lot of stress whether it’s financial, personal, emotional or otherwise, it’s important to dedicate yourselves to each other and work together to bust the stress rather than letting stress tear the two of you up. The following stress busters are something the two of you can do together and while many are focused on the individual, sharing the stress busters is a way to team the two of you up so that you are working together and cementing the two of you together. As the old saying goes, that which does not … Continue reading

Leslie Nielsen Dead at 84

Actor Leslie Nielsen has died of complications from pneumonia today in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was 84. Just the other day, my family and I were watching the movie Airplane! I love that movie. Anyone who has seen it can’t forget some of Nielsen’s classic lines – “I just want to wish you both good luck, we’re all counting on you…” “You can tell me. I’m a doctor,” and my favorite “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.” It took a long time before I realized Leslie Nielsen had once been a dramatic actor and not always the funny … Continue reading

Mortgage Over Relationship

In an article I saw the average size of mortgages in Australia had hot an all time high. The average loan was for $367,000. My mind can’t even comprehend a loan that size or how you’d repay it. That’s more than our whole house cost! In December last year it was reported Australia had overtaken USA as the country building the largest houses. The trend is towards a family room, home theatres, parent’s retreats etc. The average size of the Aussie home according to experts is now 215 square meters which translates to around 23 square feet. But that’s the … Continue reading

Is Quality Time a Myth?

Working women are you short changing your spouse and your children? When talking yesterday with Mick about the blog I’d written about working women and marriage, he came up with several comments I thought were worth noting about the amount of time spent with children in particular. Yes, we‘ve all heard the phrase ‘quality time’ and how parents should spend ‘quality time’ with their spouse and their children. But what does this mean exactly? The reality is that if they are working full time, the amount of time the working woman can realistically spend with their spouse and children is … Continue reading

Even Rock Star Wives Sing the Blues

One afternoon not too long ago as I was folding laundry I was watching True Hollywood Story: Rock Star Wives. It was sensational. Some of the rock stars profiled included Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Alice Cooper, Duff Mckagan (Guns N’ Roses, Velvet Revolver), Slash (Guns N’ Roses), and Vince Neil (Motley Crue). Both the wives and the rock stars were surprisingly candid about the trials and tribulations their marriages experienced. What struck me most was how so many of the marriages had encountered every kind of worst case scenario imaginable. And I’m not talking about just one kind of worst … Continue reading

Mickey Mouse Club: Blessing or Curse?

The original Mickey Mouse Club, back in the 1950s produced Annette Funicello who went on to make plenty of popular summertime beach blanket movies. In the 1970s, the Mickey Mouse Club got a little redhead named Molly Ringwald started in show business. Molly went on to have a string of very popular teen coming of age movies in the 1980s. The 1990s version of the Mickey Mouse Club introduced such luminaries as Ryan Gosling, Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Keri Russell and Britney Spears. While reporters and casting agents may be marveling at the massive pool of talent provided by the … Continue reading
