The Dirty Diaper and Your Child’s Health

According to a New York Times article, “In a study published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, researchers led by Anita Kozyrskyj found that babies born by C-Section vaginally, and that infants who were breast-fed had a different recipe of bacteria in their guts than those who were given formula.” And when it comes to health, specifically digestive heath and the immune system, it is the bacteria, or bugs, that count. Studies have long shown that children who have been delivered by C-Section have greater risks of certain illnesses, such as asthma, diabetes and obesity, as do children who were … Continue reading

Moving With Baby

My husband and I are thinking of moving again. This time, it will not be a cross-country move, but probably somewhere close. We have moved a lot in our marriage, and are currently living somewhere the longest we’ve ever lived in one home since we got married 10 years ago. We have only lived here 2.5 years, and I’m getting the itch to move. Moving with a baby is hard, though. In fact, I get a little nostalgic every time we move because my babies are growing up so fast. I remember when we moved out of our tiny 2 … Continue reading

Insurance Blog Week in Review – Week of February 19 – 25, 2012

Every week, there can be anywhere from twelve to fourteen different blogs appearing on the Insurance Blog. It can be difficult to keep track of them all. The Insurance Blog Week in Review is a quick and easy way to “ketchup” on the blogs that you missed. Desk FDR Used as Insurance Salesman Gets New Home Before Franklin D. The Insurance Podcast Roundup went up … Continue reading

Happy Helping Husbands

Today I took my kids, including my newest addition, to story time at the public library. My oldest son loves it. I frequently meet other moms there and get a chance to get out of the house and feel a little “normal”. Or at least, as normal as I can with a new baby around. Today I sat next to a Mom and we started chatting. She had 4 kids (twins in the middle) and her youngest was still a baby, although starting to toddle around. During the conversation, she said that she and her husband were going through a … Continue reading

Yours, Mine and Ours

Sometimes I think I may read too much. I recently read an article that said marriage may be a luxury item, only available to the well educated. Can this be true? Is this what is holding so many single mothers back from pursuing a relationship that could end in marriage? I know there are so many more factors to consider when you are a single mother, that is one of the reasons I’m still single. We worry about how our children will take another man in their lives, how they will adapt to instant siblings and an entire family they … Continue reading

Divorced Men and Women on Dating

Recently a study of 2000 people was done as part of a promo for the movie” Crazy, Stupid Love” and it was discovered that divorced men are more eager to remarry than divorced women. 47% of divorced men were ready to remarry compared with only 20% of divorced women. Men also seem to jump back into the dating world faster than women with more of them using on line dating services and willing to hire a professional matchmaker to help them find a woman. They didn’t ask any follow up questions so I don’t know why the participants answered the … Continue reading

Do You and Your Spouse Compete?

We’re human, so it’s only natural that we have a little bit of a competitive streak in us, right? I have to admit, I do enjoy beating Matt at a game of Words with Friends or Phase 10. He would definitely beat me in any kind of physical race or competition, so it’s only fair that I hold my own with board games, right? See, I knew you’d understand. But what about the need some husbands and wives have to constantly one-up each other? I’ve seen this happen, and it’s not pretty. Husband: I have a headache. Wife: Me too! … Continue reading

When Your Marriage Faces Parenting Challenges

It’s been an interesting week in our home. There are points in time that everything is going along fairly smoothly. There may be a bump or two in the road, but nothing major. Then suddenly you have a week where all three of your preteen and teen children decide to test the waters or stretch your patience or whatever it may be. Suddenly your marriage finds itself being tested as well. Navigating through the relationship of a husband and wife is challenging enough without throwing into the mix some children. Now you have additional relationships to work through. Then there … Continue reading

The Baby Boomers Have Taken Up Genealogy

The Baby Boomer Generation seems to have taken up a new hobby. They are becoming genealogists, collectors of family history, and keepers of the family photos. It is very likely that when this generation was much younger, they never would have guessed that this would be how they would be spending their time in their “old age”. People born between 1946 and 1964 are part of the Baby Boomer generation. This generation was born after WWII ended, and there are a lot of them. Hence, the name “Baby Boom”. This is the group that came of age during the rebellious … Continue reading

Between You and Me

Going through a divorce is an emotional time for everyone involved. When my ex husband and I split not even six months ago I was devastated and hurt by the things that he had said and done throughout our marriage. I was angry at the position he had put me and our son in. It was far from fair and there were times when I honestly hated him for it. Our son was 2 ½ at the time and while he didn’t understand the logistics of everything that was going on he did know that something was wrong. Dad was … Continue reading
