Parenting When You Just Don’t Feel Well

I got very little sleep last night, and the sleep that I did get was less than restful. My little Logan had a rough night. He was restless and woke up in tears. I’m still not sure exactly what was bothering him, but he clearly wasn’t feeling very well. I tended to him throughout the night, but his restlessness in turn became my restlessness which made for a bit of a long night in the Mommy department. I woke up exhausted with the beginnings of a migraine and knew that it was going to be a very long day. I … Continue reading

Children’s Classic Makes a Comeback

Chompo Bars, spelling “ice cream” with a “q” and a “p”, made-up songs, and internal torment about sharing with a sibling… oh, the memories. I’ve missed you Frances. It’s been decades since I journeyed to the whimsical world of Frances the badger, and returning is like slipping into a well-worn pair of cozy footed flannel pajamas. The warm, fuzzy feeling envelopes you like a mother’s hug. Interestingly, that feeling hasn’t diminished over time. When I flipped to the first page of A Birthday for Frances, it was like taking a stroll down memory lane. Still, it’s hard to believe it’s … Continue reading

Planning Special Moments

In the past two weeks I’ve looked at planning romantic moments for your spouse, making them feel special, and how to cope with missing your spouse even when he or she is more or less around. How do all of these things come together? In me trying to plan special things for my husband. Now that Jon has completed grad school I want to do something special for him. Parties he hast to host are too draining for him, so that’s out. I thought of the perfect idea: I’d bake him a cake. Not just any cake, but a black … Continue reading

Confessions of a Single Mom

When they placed my son in my arms over four years ago there were some things I swore I would never do. As a single mom it got harder to keep all those promises to myself and as guilty as I feel, I have done a fair number of them. So here it goes, here are a few confessions from a single mom. This morning my son had chips for breakfast. We were a half an hour late for church, his shoes were on the wrong feet, I couldn’t find my keys (as usual), and I had to gather all … Continue reading

10 Mistakes I Made As a First-Time Mom-Part III

I hope maybe one person might learn from my mistakes. But, the truth is that we all have to make our own as we become first-time Moms. So, maybe you won’t take my advice, and that’s OK. Because by NOT taking my advice, you took it, in a way. Remember what I said in part II of this series about trusting YOUR gut? And, for the first 4 tidbits in this series you can go here. Well, last, but certainly not least, are my final three things I learned from my mistakes as a first-time Mom. 8. Don’t buy a … Continue reading

The Overextended Mom

We all have times in our lives where we bite off a little more than we can chew. This is especially common among mothers, and perhaps even more common among single mothers who are doing everything on their own. In order to be a good mother we feel as if we need to take our children to soccer, piano, and ballet, volunteer in the classroom, help kids with homework, make sure they are getting three wonderfully cooked homemade meals each day, while talking to your mother on the phone, maintaining a spotless home, and preparing a presentation for your latest … Continue reading

Moms Living with Chronic Back Pain

Is lower back pain keeping you sitting on the sideline of your own life? Like so many moms, I have been spending the last several years carting around infants, toddlers, and groceries, picking up stray toys and toting baskets of laundry. Chronic back pain has plagued me in my adult life. I have gone through phases in my life where I have made more time for exercise and health. … Continue reading

Cookies with Mommy

When I was pregnant with my second child, my husband and I had some concerns about how our son would handle sharing his time with us with his new baby sister. After hearing numerous horror stories about sibling rivalry, I wanted to find some ways to put aside some special time for just me and my son. I did not want him to feel like he was being replaced or that we loved his little sister more than we loved him. In many ways his baby sister has more needs that require immediate and consuming attention. Once his baby sister … Continue reading

Mommy Meddlers

This might appear as a vent session. In fact, I can almost guarantee it. But, I have to. I have three kids now, and my youngest is 11 weeks old. I have experienced Mommy meddling many times in having these three children. Yet, for some reason, it’s bugging me more and more the third time around. What am I talking about? I’m talking about people butting in on your parenting, or maybe, giving their two cents worth on something simple when you didn’t ask for it. I’m not talking about the meddling mother-in-law, or the very opinionated sister. No, I’m … Continue reading
