Federal Government Says No to California’s Medi-Cal Co-Pays

The federal government has rejected a plan created by California Governor Jerry Brown (and other lawmakers). The plan would have required Medi-Cal to charge co-payments to the people who use this form of public health insurance. The plan may have been a way for the state of California to save money. Medi-Cal is part of the Medicaid program in California. It started in 1996. The funding comes from both the state government and the federal government. This public form of health insurance was designed to be used by low-income individuals, disabled individuals, and people who have specific types of diseases. … Continue reading

Estate Planning and the Step Family

For too many of us, estate planning is the thing we’re always going to get to but often don’t. It’s like flossing, but with exponentially greater potential for harm. I understand why we procrastinate, believe me I do, but a failure to act in this department can have a devastating effect on your family. Our financial planner had been after us to create an estate plan for a year; as we began preparations for an extended trip through Mexico, it seemed irresponsible not to have something in place. We contacted an attorney who came highly recommended, and blithely scheduled an … Continue reading

Real Life and the Movies

What is your spouse’s favorite movie? Do you know? I know Mick’s favorite movie is Casablanca. My favorite movie of all time, as Mick knew when He bought me the CD recently, is Friendly Persuasion. It’s probably no surprise to anyone that my favorite movie is very much concerned with a loving marriage and family relationships. If you haven’t seen Friendly Persuasion can I suggest you take a look? It’s a great story about the lives of one Quaker family and the impact of the civil war on their values, lifestyle and choices. It’s also a film with a lot … Continue reading

Three Ms You Don’t Want in Marriage

Yesterday we looked at some Ms to incorporate into marriage. Today I’ve got three Ms you definitely don’t want in your marriage Manipulative We’ve all seen then the wives who manipulate their husbands with tears and emotional blackmail and acts designed to get what they want. We see it in those who manipulate their spouse into doing what they want when they want it, using sex or whatever other means at their disposal to get their own way. Manipulative people often use tactics to make the other person feel guilty, if they don’t comply. They use silent treatment or lies … Continue reading

Turkeys: “We’re Going to Disneyland!”

Thanksgiving is an all-American tradition, full of family, turkey, cranberry sauce, parades, floats, and the blissful tryptophan-induced nap we all sink into at the end of the evening. New traditions are added to the holiday all the time, such as the Presidential Turkey Pardon. Since 2005 another all-American tradition has been added: a trip to Disneyland. When President Obama pardons two turkeys today the birds will then fly to Disneyland in California to serve as honorary Grand Marshals of the Disney Thanksgiving Day Parade. Afterward they will retire to the Big Thunder Ranch in Disneyland’s Frontierland. Some claim the presidential … Continue reading

Your Parents Will Affect Your Marriage

Whether we like it or not, our parents and the way they brought us up will affect our marriage. You might choose to follow their example or you might look at what they did and decide you need to do the opposite. Children who come from families that have divorced and especially those divorced multiple times, can often have a problem themselves when it comes to marriage. They may be hesitant to commit because they’ve seen first hand how easily marriages can break down. If your mother has been one who put her children’s needs over that of her husband, … Continue reading

It took seven and a half years (but who’s counting?) for Harrison Ford to pop the question to girlfriend Calista Flockhart, but at least he got the answer he was hoping for. Actually, the mystery regarding, which of the lovely Desperate Housewives’ stars, is getting the boot from the show is really not that mysterious at all.
