Flu Season has Struck

It’s been a rough weekend, really rough…really, really rough. I just completed my first week of classes. I was thrilled to be able to have the weekend to catch up on homework from the week, while Logan was at his dad’s; no such luck. About Thursday afternoon I could feel I was coming down with something. My dad had been sick all week and Logan was getting the beginnings of what I thought was a cold on top of that. Our house had become a walking germ, but I prayed it would be short-lived. When Logan came back from his … Continue reading

Lucky as the Tin Man

We’ve all seen the classic tale of the Wizard of Oz. The cowardly lion is desperate for courage, the scarecrow is in need of a brain, and our dear friend the tin man wants nothing more than heart to fill his empty chest. After my divorce I would have given anything to be the tin man. My heart was aching. I was feeling such an intense pain I would have done anything to make it stop. Nothing brought relief. I wasn’t ready to be divorced. I wasn’t ready to be on my own again, but I had no choice … Continue reading

Rough Ride: The Roller Coaster of Adolescence

Few things strike fear into the heart of parents more than the approaching adolescence of their children. They’ve heard horror stories from family and friends, and they dread the fear of the unknown and how it’s going to go with their own kids. Will that happy-go-lucky child turn into some sort of a sullen monster? Will the childhood skirmishes of yesterday turn into open warfare? Will the days of having their friends over all the time turn into years of going out to be with friends somewhere else? Most of us can remember feeling awkward, unattractive, anxious, and overwhelmed as … Continue reading

What Would you Have Done?

As a Caucasian person I had never really had to face racism directly. So when we chose to adopt a child or children of color, racism never really entered my thoughts. I never would have expected to encounter it. Maybe it was me just being naive but I never thought that we would have to deal with it. Unfortunately we have been confronted with racism, hatred and bigots. I am not sure why a person can have such strong views about something that has nothing to do with them. I must say, I do know one of my sons is … Continue reading

A Trip to the Eye Doctor

I don’t know about your kids, but my youngest has definitely figured out that he does not like doctors. The instant we walk through the doors of the waiting room, into the office, he will sit down on the floor and start to cry. He knows that he does not like the whole experience! So, he is not very cooperative either. At our last well child visit, his pediatrician had some concerns. I mentioned to him that my son had extreme light sensitivity. And, when I say extreme, I mean EXTREME! He would scream in the car like he was … Continue reading

Something to Do with Pancake Batter (Besides Pancakes)

It so happens that I lucked out with getting some pancake mix for practically nothing. There I was in the store, checking the clearance food cart during my normal shopping trip when I spotted several boxes of dry pancake mix. There was nothing wrong with the mix, with the exception of the fact that the boxes were all dented on the corners. This meant that the store slashed the pricing in order to sell the product, since no one will pick up a dented box of pancake mix and expect to pay full price, apparently. Normally, I mix up my … Continue reading

Why teenagers? Do you have any idea what you’re getting yourself into?!

The initial response received from others when announcing that you are planning to adopt varies widely. I have heard the occasional “That’s wonderful!” And that’s nice. We’re not doing this for praise, but it is nice when others can be supportive; whether it’s the reason for doing something or not, everyone likes to get a positive response to news shared with friends and family. However, what I most often hear, especially when we add that we are adopting teenagers, is more along the lines of “why?”… “Do you know how difficult that is going to be?”… “Do you have any … Continue reading

Luck Has Nothing To Do With It.

The other day we saw how in the soap opera marriage it is so often about self. Sadly that’s also what you see that in some other marriages around where each person is mostly concerned with their rights and what they want, rather than caring for their mate and being selfless in their love. It is an idea that is constantly promoted by our society and our advertising media – that you’re no the most important person in a marriage. I beg to differ. I’d suggest that rather than being focused on self the marriage which is more likely to … Continue reading
