Diamonds Do Not Equal Love

When I first started at the Marriage Blog I mentioned my feelings on diamond commercials and promised to expound on them. Given that we see many such ads this time of year, it seems like an appropriate time to make my promised follow-up. I’m not a big jewelry person so diamonds never appealed to me. That wouldn’t really be a big deal, except that for my entire life I’ve been inundated by ads and assumptions telling me the opposite. “So what?” you might wonder. Well, the media can have a much more powerful effect, subtle though it might be, on … Continue reading

My Unconventional Valentine’s History

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, but as you might be able to guess, Jon and I don’t really do anything for Valentine’s Day. The holiday does mean one thing: candy hearts. The weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day are the only time of the year I can find them. Their close companion Necco Wafers just aren’t the same. So I suppose one might say Jon gets me a Valentine’s Day present, because he usually buys me candy hearts. However, even this practice has two exceptions that probably exclude it as a Valentine’s celebration. First: Jon usually brings home … Continue reading

Love Letters: Do You Know Who Mildred Loving Is?

It’s been 40 years since Mildred Loving became infamous and I say infamous because despite her actions and her heart, she wasn’t painted with the same brush as Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks, as you may know, was the black woman who took a seat on a bus and launched a Civil Rights movement. Mildred Loving is a black woman who fell in love and married a white man in segregated Virginia 40 years ago. History in Love In a rare interview with the Associated Press, Mildred Loving stated that she doesn’t consider herself the hero that many other mixed race … Continue reading

Love Notes: Your Top Five Romantic Moments

One of the first things I saw this morning when I got up was a video log of the top five most romantic moments in movie history. Among those moments cited included the fire escape proposal in Pretty Woman, the moment when Rose is riding on the rail with her arms outspread, trusting Jack for the first time in Titanic and the scene where Demi Moore’s character realizes that Sam is really there in Ghost and she hears him say I love you and she says “Ditto.” Romantic Moments I have to say that I agree with their choices. Those … Continue reading

Love Letters: Flights of Romance

How much do you know about Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh? For years, those names only meant one thing to me – the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. It was a scandal that shocked the nation in the early part of the twentieth century and it is a heart-breaking tale to this day. Who Were Anne Morrow & Charles Lindbergh Their love affair or storybook romance as the popular press wrote of them in their own time was not quite a fairytale. Lindbergh made history as an aviator and he was a national hero. He met Anne Morrow during a visit to … Continue reading

Love Letters – Love & Poets

We’ve talked about Valentine’s, the history behind it and how we celebrate it. Now we are going to take a look at great romances in history as a part of our 14 Days of Romance here at the Marriage Blog. I thought it very appropriate that the first romance we look at is between two very popular and beautiful poets from the 19th century, perhaps you’ve heard of them? Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning. The Brownings Their romance was born in January of 1845, when Robert Browning began what would become known as the greatest correspondence of all time. Elizabeth … Continue reading

Love Letters: The Legend of Valentine’s

Welcome to our first Love Letters. Love Letters is going to look at the history of romance and love and is another feature of our 14 Days of Romance here in the Marriage Blog. Today’s Love Letters is going to look back at the Legend of Valentine’s Day. Where did it come from and why do we celebrate it? The Legend of Valentine It seems appropriate to begin our great tales of romance with the legend of Valentine. In the United States, February is synonymous with candy, hearts, perfume, flowers and romance. From our smallest children making their very simple … Continue reading

Love Notes: Groundhog Day

Today is Groundhog’s Day also known as Candlemas. It’s a celebration of light returning to the world and for others it’s Groundhog’s Day, the day the groundhog sticks his head out of his nest and if he sees his shadow and flees back, then we’re in for six more weeks of winter. If he doesn’t, then we’re in for an early spring. The groundhog isn’t always an accurate barometer of the length of our winter, but hey – it’s a fun story. They even made a movie called Groundhog’s Day that featured Bill Murray as a man who relived the … Continue reading

Love & Romance: This Day in History

I have found it impossible to carry on the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge the duties of king, as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love. – These were the words spoken by then, King Edward VIII, great grandson of Queen Victoria and Uncle to the current reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. He gave the radio address during the evening of December 11, 1936. Born in 1896, Edward was groomed for the throne since birth, but remained unmarried as he neared his 40th birthday. In 1934, he met and fell … Continue reading
