Book Review : For the Love of a Child: The Journey of Adoption

Monica Blume, a social worker and counselor with LDS Family Services, once saw a young woman who had been adopted watch a film entitled “ Adoption and Unwed Parents”. Tears ran down the young woman’s face. “I never knew that my birth mother loved me,” she said. Blume, who has worked with many, many birthmothers, birth fathers, birth grandparents over the years, wrote For the Love of a Child: The Journey of Adoption not only in hopes of being helpful to birthmothers, birth families, and clergy who may be involved in adoption decisions, but in hopes, she says, that she … Continue reading

Famous Oprah Moments – Part 2

So, this week, I am talking about famous Oprah moments. After all, the groundbreaking talk show host has been on television for 22 years, there has to be a few incredible moments other than just Tom Cruise’s couch jumping. Here are some more remarkable Oprah moments: Oprah Interviews Betty Broderick In 1992, Oprah had a bit of a Geraldo moment when she interviewed murderer Betty Broderick. Broderick had killed her husband and his lover, but Oprah wanted to get behind the real story. As Betty put it, attorney Dan Broderick and she had had a perfect marriage until he fell … Continue reading

Should You Keep Items from an Ex?

Through our dating years we collect all types of things from our mates. You may have love letters, gifts, movie tickets, cards, and more. These types of things are often saved as memorabilia from your relationship. So what happens to all of those things after your relationship is over and you marry someone else? Sometimes those things are kept. Often times they are thrown away. Should you keep items from your ex relationships after you are married? I think that it greatly depends on the nature of what you are keeping and how your spouse feels about the ex boyfriend … Continue reading

Marrying the Incarcerated

When someone is in prison, they look for people on the outside to be their life lines. While the prison system in the United States is not a pleasant place to be (although you could make the argument that U.S. prisons are far better than prisons elsewhere) they are still prisons. When you’ve committed a crime against society and you are sentenced to prison – you are not sentenced there as a part of a social club, but rather as a punishment and as a form of rehabilitation. Your days are monitored and strictly scheduled. You may attend classes and … Continue reading

Love Letters: Do You Know Who Mildred Loving Is?

It’s been 40 years since Mildred Loving became infamous and I say infamous because despite her actions and her heart, she wasn’t painted with the same brush as Rosa Parks. Rosa Parks, as you may know, was the black woman who took a seat on a bus and launched a Civil Rights movement. Mildred Loving is a black woman who fell in love and married a white man in segregated Virginia 40 years ago. History in Love In a rare interview with the Associated Press, Mildred Loving stated that she doesn’t consider herself the hero that many other mixed race … Continue reading

Letters of Love: My Three Sons

As a parent, one of the most important things we do is demonstrate to our children how to live and how to love. We teach them how to build relationships, maintain their relationships and improve their relationships. We cannot do it all for them and sometimes we’re not always the best role models. For one mom, who struggled with the loss of her husband, this has been a conundrum she has faced for years. This is her letter and her story. My Three Sons Thank you for saying that the letter I wanted to write was acceptable for your Letters … Continue reading

Love Letters: Flights of Romance

How much do you know about Charles and Anne Morrow Lindbergh? For years, those names only meant one thing to me – the Lindbergh baby kidnapping. It was a scandal that shocked the nation in the early part of the twentieth century and it is a heart-breaking tale to this day. Who Were Anne Morrow & Charles Lindbergh Their love affair or storybook romance as the popular press wrote of them in their own time was not quite a fairytale. Lindbergh made history as an aviator and he was a national hero. He met Anne Morrow during a visit to … Continue reading

Letters of Love: Rendering Aid

On September 11, 2001, our country woke up to find itself under attack. Many people died that day and for those of us who were old enough to witness it and remember, we will never forget. For one young woman, September 11th began with an engagement and today; her husband serves in the U.S. Armed Forces. This is her letter. Letters of Love: Dear Lord

Our relationship with the divine is a profound one and deeply personal. How we express that relationship, that joy and duty that we pursue vigorously or quietly – that is also very personal. Today’s letter is an expression of faith and love for the divine, honoring their belief and their perspective on the relationship they share with the Lord. Dear Lord My Lord, I was inspired to write this letter as I read the letters appearing in this marriage blog. The first letter I wrote to you, I wrote at the age of 5. I remember my mother helped me … Continue reading
