Christianity Leaves No Room for Hate

God is love. He is not hate. So, it is amazing to me, how some individuals can justify their actions of hate in the name of Christianity. I recently read an article on CNN.com that you can find here where an extremist, radical “church” (and I use those quotations on purpose) are going to protest the funeral of Elizabeth Edwards for “issues related to her personal life”. Whatever that means. The article goes on to say how this church has protested at funerals before. They have protested at funerals of fallen soldiers claiming that these soldiers were punished by God. … Continue reading

Leave Room for the Individual

Listening to some parents and reading a lot, I come up against one idea – that of parents trying to make their children clones of themselves. What do I mean? Parents who want their children to go into the family business, or follow the same career path they did, or maybe the one they dreamed about but were unable for various reasons to follow. It’s been the theme of lots of movies where parents want children to be and do one thing and they have some other passion e.g. Billy Elliot. It’s something I find offensive – parents who want … Continue reading

Home Blog Month in Review: October

As I sit here looking out my window at the backyard, the birds are hovering in the pine tree against a strong wind and steady rain. The temperature is chilly today, and the calendar reminds me that we have left October behind. October 1st Buy a Home for $1.75 It seems that the housing crisis has made some interesting news lately. Home Month in Review: September 2008 Has the weather turned cooler now that September has passed? Pretty soon, it will be time to get that heat turned back on! Meanwhile, check out all of the articles that were posted … Continue reading

“Leave Me ALONE!” The Child Who Seeks Emotional Isolation

Some children become so discouraged with their sense of self that they simply withdraw. Rather than compete with other kids, which they feel they can’t do because of their many inadequacies, they choose not to participate. And rather than disappoint the adults in their lives, they choose to build a wall of silence. These are the students who sit in the corner, fiddling with a pencil, refusing to raise their hand or join the group. They often feel frustrated by adult attempts to engage them in conversation or to force them to participate. As I have noted in previous blogs, … Continue reading

MyMagic+ to Record Disney Guest Experience

Disney’s always looking for a way to get ahead in its parks, including providing the best customer service around. Its constant raising of prices might seem counter intuitive to that, but at least it keeps upgrading its services.  The New York Times has a fascinating new report on the Disney Parks’ latest effort: MyMagic+. MyMagic+ takes the physical form of a wristband park guests wear in place of tickets.  Guests won’t have to trade in paper tickets anymore, instead waving their bands in front of the new FastPass monitors (even if they didn’t purchase a FastPass, those Mickey monitors are used).  MyMagic+ … Continue reading

Simplify Halloween

And by “simplify” I mean “keep it cheap.” Fortunately, cheap doesn’t have to translate into ugly. Goodness knows my 8-year-old would just “diiiiiiiie!!” if I suggested we scale back on Halloween costumes and decor. However, like many families the world over; we live on a budget. A tight budget, that doesn’t allow us to go bat wild celebrating pagan holidays. Still, I don’t want her missing out on all of the candy-coated fun, so instead of canceling Halloween, I find frugal ways we can participate without going into debt. Here are some of the inexpensive ways we keep the holiday … Continue reading

KCHIP Covers Kids in Kentucky

The Medicaid programs in each and every state include a portion that is designed to cover children. This part is often called CHIP, which stands for Children’s Health Insurance Program. In Kentucky, the program is called KCHIP, and the K stands for Kentucky. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to provide accessible health care for individuals and families who are low-income, and who cannot afford to purchase a health insurance plan from a private insurance company. Medicaid is funded, in part, by the federal government. Funding for Medicaid also comes from the … Continue reading

Back-to-School Breakfast Ideas

Now that the new school year is underway, my days as a short order cook are over… at least when it comes to breakfast. This summer, I could have easily earned employee of the month honors as a flapjack flipper at IHOP, but instead chose to use my pancake-making skills to keep my 7-year-old happy and full. Kids need a healthy breakfast in order for their bodies and brains to function properly. However, during the school year, this important morning meal often gets skipped in the interest of saving time or scoring a few more minutes of sleep. Ironically, eating … Continue reading

Wyoming’s Medicaid Program is Called Equality Care

Wyoming, like all other states, has a Medicaid program. Some states simply refer to the program as Medicaid, and others attached a unique name to it. In Wyoming, the Medicaid program is called EqualityCare. Medicaid is a public, or government run, form of health insurance. It is designed to help people who are low-income, and who cannot afford to purchase a private health insurance plan, to find affordable health insurance coverage. In Wyoming, the Medicaid program is also called EqualityCare. It is administered through the Wyoming Department of Health. Their website says “Welcome to Medicaid”. Under that header, it says: … Continue reading

Pennsylvania Cuts Medicaid Dental Coverage

The state of Pennsylvania has decided to cut back on the dental coverage currently offered in their Medicaid program. Medicaid is an insurance for people who are low-income. It is unlikely this group will be able to afford to purchase a private form of dental insurance. I’ve noticed a disturbing trend. It seems that when a state is interested in making cuts, in order to reduce costs and fit within a budget, those cuts come out of the programs that are designed to help the people who have the lowest income. This would be the group that is least able … Continue reading
